Key Takeaways: 5 things to know

  1. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed mines destroyed four tankers near Hormuz, but no ship was named and no outside source confirmed it (see Media Lies and Propaganda by Country).
  2. Binance said hackers used fake job interviews to break in, and that the FBI tied the theft to North Korea (see Cyber Front).
  3. A viral video of an Iranian strike on a US aircraft carrier was an old AI-generated clip, Lead Stories found (see Fact-checks of viral claims).
  4. The FBI said no election-related operation took place, refuting posts about more than 20,000 fake ballots found in Houston (see Fact-checks of viral claims).
  5. A fake Fox News graphic showed the network calling Georgia’s Senate race for Stacey Abrams, who is not on the ballot (see Fact-checks of viral claims).

This disinformation and fact check update for November 4, 2026, leads with Iran’s unconfirmed claim that mines destroyed four tankers near Hormuz, Binance’s account of how North Korean hackers got in, and false election-day posts in the United States.[1][2][3] It follows the November 3 information war update; the War Room gives context.

Media Lies and Propaganda by Country

Iran

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said four “violating” tankers hit naval mines on a route south of the Strait of Hormuz that Iran calls prohibited, and were destroyed.[4][5] ? Unproven Rebuttal: the statement named no ships, and no ship owner, flag state or maritime agency confirmed it in the sources checked. Today’s Iran War Update has the full claim.

Russia

Yevgenia Yashina, communications director of the Russian-run Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, told TASS that Ukrainian troops are carrying out a “deliberate manhunt for nuclear workers.”[6] ? Unproven Rebuttal: the claim rests on the plant management’s word, and no independent check appeared in the sources checked.

North Korea

Kim Yo Jong’s denial that North Korea stole $6.3 billion from Binance, covered in yesterday’s update, drew two new responses.[7] Label: Disputed. Rebuttal: Binance’s first report said the FBI attributed the attack to North Korea, and a State Department spokesperson called North Korean cybercrime “a global problem.”[8][9]

United States

President Trump told the Financial Times that Russia and Ukraine are “at the point of saying, ‘Let’s make a deal.'”[10] Label: Disputed. Rebuttal: the newspaper said Ukrainian negotiators do not share his optimism.[11] Today’s Ukraine War update has more.

Armenia

A network of seemingly inauthentic Facebook accounts promoted opposition leader Gagik Tsarukyan and his party in Armenian diaspora groups before Armenia’s June 7 election, DFRLab found.[12] Most members of the groups could not vote unless they traveled to Armenia.[13]

China and Cuba

No new false claim by Chinese or Cuban officials or state media with a documented rebuttal was found in the sources checked.[14]

Cyber Front

Binance said a fake recruiter contacted one of its engineers in September, and a coding test he downloaded carried malware.[19] The attackers then used stolen credentials to move about $6.34 billion on October 29, and Binance said it had replaced 98% of the affected tokens by October 31.[20] CISA added one exploited WordPress flaw to its catalog on November 3.[21]

Domestic Affairs

United States

Official press releases said every Westchester vote would be counted, Lead Stories reported.[22]

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

No war crimes or civilian harm tied to information operations were documented in this window. The nuclear plant’s claim about Ukrainian troops is unverified (see Media Lies and Propaganda by Country).[23]

Statements by Officials

United States statements come first; statements by other governments, companies and state-linked voices follow and are labeled. Quotes are verbatim and attributed.

What to Watch

  • Whether any shipowner or maritime agency confirms the tankers the Guards say were destroyed.[27]
  • More false claims as US midterm results are counted.[28]
  • Whether North Korea answers Binance’s account of the hack.[29]

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

This analysis applies the Seven Lenses of Geopolitical Power to the day’s information fights.[30]

Geography & Strategic Position

Iran’s mine claims concern a route it has declared off limits, so each claim also asserts control over the waterway.[31]

Military & Security

A fake video of a carrier strike can spread faster than any official denial in a live conflict.[32]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Washington’s repeated cybercrime charge keeps the Binance case on the US-North Korea agenda.[33]

Economic & Industrial Power

Binance’s pledge to cover the losses shifts the cost of the theft from users to the exchange.[34]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

The hack began with a fake job offer, showing how social engineering can open the way for malware.[35]

Domestic Politics & Information

Several false election-day posts came from satire accounts, and not every account carried a satire label.[36]

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Claims that cannot be checked, such as Iran’s tanker counts, still shape shipping risk.[37]

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
Fact-checkers who reached officials quickly on election day.
Critical vulnerability
Unnamed-ship claims in the Gulf that no one can verify fast.
Decisive uncertainty
Whether Iran’s tanker claims are ever confirmed.
Likely trajectory
More recycled AI videos tied to the Iran war.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
