  1. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards navy claimed 11 rule-breaking tankers have burned in Hormuz since October 25, but no maritime agency has confirmed it (see Media Lies and Propaganda by Country).
  2. A study summarized by Ukrainska Pravda found that two AI chatbots repeated disputed Russian and Chinese state media claims in 70% of their answers (see Media Lies and Propaganda by Country).
  3. President Trump called the Venezuela raid a war where “nobody died,” though AP reported at least 56 Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel were killed (see Fact-checks of viral claims).
  4. A sharp viral photo of the Learjet that crashed in Palm Beach, Florida, had been edited with AI tools, the fact-checking site Lead Stories found (see Fact-checks of viral claims).
  5. Ukraine’s and Russia’s emergency alert apps both sent false warnings to the public within hours of each other on November 1 (see Cyber Front).

This disinformation and fact check update for November 2, 2026, leads with Iran’s unconfirmed claim that 11 tankers burned in Hormuz, a study showing chatbots repeating Russian state claims, and hacked alert apps in Ukraine and Russia.[1][2][3] It follows the November 1 information war update; the War Room gives context.

Media Lies and Propaganda by Country

Iran

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) navy wrote on X that “eleven violator tankers have caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz since October 25,” adding that “some of the vessels sank.”[4] ? Unproven Rebuttal: the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) notices in the window reported one vessel hit by an unknown projectile in the strait and a tanker struck about 72 nautical miles east of Khafji, with no sinking reported.[5][6] No owner, flag state or maritime agency has confirmed the Guards’ separate claim that its mines crippled two ships on a “southern route.”[7]

Guards spokesman Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohebbi posted an image of vessels and drones with the words “They sank!”, which Mehr News Agency, an Iranian state-affiliated outlet, framed as a reply to the US Central Command chief.[8] ? Unproven Rebuttal: the post gave no names, dates or places, and none of the sinkings has been confirmed in the sources checked. Today’s Iran War Update covers the tanker attacks.

Russia

A study by the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) and the analytics firm Sy.nexus, summarized by Ukrainska Pravda, tested how Claude Sonnet 5 and Mistral Large answered questions built from Russian and Chinese state media claims.[9] Both models repeated propaganda claims in 70% of their answers on disputed or false assertions, including a Russian Defense Ministry claim that its forces captured the village of Vilne in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.[10] The study found TASS in the search results behind 140 of Claude’s 280 answers, with fewer warnings in Mistral’s answers.[11]

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said it seized FPV drone goggles rigged with explosives by “Ukrainian special services” and sent to troops as humanitarian aid by post.[12] ? Unproven Rebuttal: the claim rests only on the FSB’s statement and video, and no independent check or Ukrainian response appeared in the sources checked.

Ukraine

Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia used the Oleshky ceasefire to rotate units, strengthen positions and bring in ammunition, while saying Ukrainian forces “acted exclusively within the framework of the agreements.”[13] Label: Disputed. Rebuttal: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ukraine may have done the same, and neither side reported a violation during the pause.[14][15] Kyiv and Moscow have both withheld how many people left Oleshky for each side; Melania Trump put the total at nearly 800.[16]

United States

President Trump told a rally in Dubuque, Iowa: “Venezuela: a one-day war, nobody died.”[17] ! Misleading Rebuttal: Trump’s January raid on Caracas killed at least 56 Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel, according to the two governments as reported by AP; Trump did not say his “nobody died” remark referred only to Americans.[18] Today’s Americas Security Update has more.

China, North Korea and Cuba

No new false claim by Chinese, North Korean or Cuban officials or state media with a documented rebuttal was found in the sources checked.[19]

Cyber Front

Ukraine’s Air Alert app sent false warnings after what the Air Force called likely “hostile interference,” including a Russian-language message about the Oreshnik missile; hours later, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said its own app suffered a “massive cyberattack.”[24][25] Neither attack was claimed in the sources checked. Binance co-founder Yi He denied a rumor that an engineer’s romance with an alleged North Korean agent opened the way for the exchange hack.[26] Ivanti patched two more Connect Secure flaws that attackers had chained in zero-day attacks since at least October 1; CISA added no new entries to its exploited-flaws catalog.[27][28]

Domestic Affairs

United States

With the midterm elections on November 3, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev accused Zelensky of trying “to undermine Republicans before the midterms,” after Zelensky said Trump could seek an energy ceasefire.[29] The fake Learjet photo spread the day after the Palm Beach crash.[30]

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

No war crimes or civilian harm tied to information operations were documented in this window. The FSB’s booby-trapped goggles claim is unverified (see Media Lies and Propaganda by Country).[31]

What to Watch

  • Whether shipowners, flag states or UKMTO confirm any of the 11 tanker fires the Guards claimed.[37]
  • Whether either side claims or traces the alert-app hacks.[38]
  • More AI-edited images and false claims on November 3, election day.[39]

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

This analysis applies the Seven Lenses of Geopolitical Power to the day’s information fights.[40]

Geography & Strategic Position

Iran’s claims about Hormuz cover a crowded strait where few ships report in public, so its numbers are hard to test quickly.[41]

Military & Security

Hacked alert apps can push civilians into shelters or out of them, which makes them a military target as well as a media one.[42]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Dmitriev’s post aims at Zelensky’s standing with Republicans, the party that controls his main source of aid, a day before US voting.[43]

Economic & Industrial Power

Talk of burning tankers can raise insurance costs whether or not every fire happened.[44]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

The chatbot study shows state outlets can reach users through AI answers when independent reporting is thin.[45]

Domestic Politics & Information

Trump’s “nobody died” line shows how a short rally remark can erase dozens of foreign deaths from a story.[46]

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Both armies’ casualty claims serve morale and cannot be verified, so they work as information weapons more than as data.[47][48]

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
Outlets that check claims against shipping notices and official records.
Critical vulnerability
Public alert systems, now hacked on both sides of the war.
Decisive uncertainty
Whether any of Iran’s tanker claims are confirmed.
Likely trajectory
More election-day fakes in the United States on November 3.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
