The Air Force recorded hits at 26 locations and debris at nine; these count places, not munitions.[34] Russia’s 47 is a daytime total for November 1, 8 AM to 8 PM Moscow time.

This Ukraine war update for November 2, 2026, covers the end of the US-brokered Oleshky ceasefire, a 193-drone overnight attack, deadly bomb strikes on Sloviansk and Izium and a reported drone strike on an oil site in Samara.[1][2] It follows yesterday’s Ukraine war update; the War Room lists every theater.

Oleshky Ceasefire Ends

The pause around occupied Oleshky, in force from October 27, ended late on November 1. Ukraine’s human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets said both sides honored their commitments.[35] Melania Trump, who coordinated the mission, wrote that it delivered aid and allowed “the evacuation of nearly 800 people,” and said she hoped it would serve “as a foundation for lasting peace.”[36] Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the operation successful but said “there are no similar plans yet.”[37]

Russia’s commissioner Yana Lantratova said she and Lubinets agreed on aid missions to Oleshky at least once a month, with the first lady’s mediation.[38] Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian troops used the pause to fortify positions; Peskov said Ukraine may have done the same.[39][40] Within hours, a Russian drone hit a hospital building in central Kherson around 7:40 AM local time, with no injuries reported.[41]

Russian Strikes on Ukraine

The Air Force said 193 drones were launched from 6 PM on November 1, from Oryol, Kursk and Bryansk, occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.[42] Two FAB-250 bombs hit central Sloviansk around 10 AM Kyiv time, killing a 68-year-old woman and injuring six; nine apartment blocks and a medical building were damaged.[43]

Guided bombs hit a five-story apartment block in Izium, killing one person and injuring 11, governor Oleh Syniehubov said.[44] Strikes on Chuhuiv and the village of Prymorske injured seven more.[45] A drone attack on Vasyshcheve on Sunday evening injured 12, including a child.[46] In Sumy Oblast, a drone killed a man and badly injured his wife.[47]

Air Force spokesman Col. Yurii Ihnat said Russia fired about 150 ballistic missiles and 80 cruise and air-launched missiles in October. The Energy Ministry recorded 208 incidents of damage to energy infrastructure over the week, with Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts worst off.[48][49]

Ukraine’s Strikes in Russia

Ukrainian drones reportedly struck the Prosvet oil pumping and dispatch station in Samara Oblast overnight, and residents filmed smoke over the area; The Kyiv Independent said it could not verify the damage.[50] Russia’s Defense Ministry said it struck Ukrainian drone assembly and storage sites in 142 locations.[51]

Front Line and Casualty Claims

Ukraine’s General Staff put Russian losses at 2,500 killed or wounded over the past day, which Ukrinform called a one-day record.[52] Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed about 925 Ukrainian troops lost over the same period.[53] Neither figure can be verified.

Talks and Diplomacy

Zelensky told Fox News that Ukraine could stop striking Russian refineries if Russia stopped hitting Ukraine’s grid or if the United States sold Kyiv Patriot missiles: “give us Patriot missiles, we will find money, not just aid.”[54] In an interview with CNN Turk, he said he was ready to meet Putin in Turkey and that coming technical talks would cover a partial energy and maritime ceasefire and prisoner exchanges.[55]

The Wall Street Journal reported that US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have pushed to resume Russian gas sales to Europe through Ukraine as part of an energy ceasefire.[56] Peskov said that “it is hardly possible to talk about that so far.”[57]

Air Defense and NATO’s Flank

Latvia’s armed forces warned of an unidentified object that briefly entered its airspace near Kraslava and Ludza on November 1; the alert ended within an hour.[58] Poland said one territorial defense brigade will become a unit dedicated to defending the border with Kaliningrad by the end of 2026.[59]

Domestic Affairs

Ukraine’s Air Alert app sent false warnings after what the Air Force called likely “hostile interference,” including a Russian-language message about the Oreshnik missile; hours later, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said its own app suffered a “massive cyberattack.”[60] Neither attack was claimed in the sources checked.

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

Russia’s withdrawal from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture took effect on November 1. The committee’s president, Alan Mitchell, said it “marks the end of any independent monitoring of places of deprivation of liberty inside the Russian Federation.”[61] The strike on the Kherson hospital and the bombing of apartment blocks in Sloviansk and Izium are allegations by Ukrainian officials; no court has ruled on them.[62][63][64]

What to Watch (Assessment)

  • Any US reply to Zelensky’s offer to pause refinery strikes in exchange for Patriot missiles.
  • Russian official comment on the Samara oil station.
  • Whether the first monthly Oleshky aid mission is scheduled.
  • Attribution of the alert-app hacks in both countries.

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

Fighting resumed around Oleshky on the lower Dnipro as soon as the pause ended, and a hospital in Kherson was hit the next morning.[3] Ukraine’s reported strike on the Prosvet oil station in Samara Oblast reached about 835 kilometers from the border.[4]

Military & Security

Russia kept up guided-bomb attacks on Donetsk and Kharkiv oblast towns, while its overnight drone wave was smaller than the previous night’s.[5][6] Each side accused the other of using the Oleshky pause to regroup.[7][8]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Washington is the hinge: it brokered the Oleshky truce, and The Wall Street Journal reported that US envoys want Russian gas to flow through Ukraine again.[9][10] Zelensky offered to meet Putin in Turkey, and Poland is creating a unit to defend its border with Kaliningrad.[11][12]

Economic & Industrial Power

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry counted 94 Russian attacks on energy and oil-and-gas sites in the last week of October.[13] Kyiv is targeting Russia’s oil logistics in return, and the Kremlin said gas transit through Ukraine is not possible for now.[14][15]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

Both countries reported hacks of their emergency alert apps within hours, with false warnings sent to the public.[16] The Air Force said Ukraine is short of Patriot interceptors against ballistic missiles.[17]

Domestic Politics & Information

Russia’s exit from Europe’s anti-torture convention took effect, ending outside inspections of its detention sites.[18] Ukraine’s General Staff reported its highest one-day Russian loss figure, a claim that cannot be verified.[19]

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Zelensky is trading a pause in refinery strikes for Patriot missiles, which gives Washington a direct lever over the energy war.[20] US interests turn on whether the Oleshky model and the energy talks can be widened before winter.

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
Russia holds the initiative in long-range strikes on Ukraine’s grid.
Critical vulnerability
Ukraine’s shortage of Patriot interceptors.
Decisive uncertainty
Whether Washington accepts Zelensky’s interceptors-for-refineries offer.
Likely trajectory
Continued strikes on energy targets by both sides while technical talks are prepared.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
