Munitions Count: Nov 3: launched, downed and hit, as reported by the named source

— = not reported by the source. Downed = intercepted or shot down. The Air Force overnight figures imply about 89% of drones and 83% of cruise missiles were downed (Peter’s World calculation)[2]. The Air Force did not give a total for ballistic missiles; Zelensky’s figure of 17 is a separate statement[2].

Komyshuvakha Bombing

Russian aerial bombs struck Komyshuvakha, about 30 km southeast of Zaporizhzhia city and about 20 km from the front line, on the morning of November 2[2]. Zelensky said a school used to hand out humanitarian aid was hit first, then nine more bombs fell on a shelter where people had taken cover[9].

The State Emergency Service first put the toll at 24 dead, including two rescuers and four police officers, and five injured[10]. On November 3, acting Governor Mykhailo Semikin said at least 31 people were killed and 48 were missing[2]. Zaporizhzhia region declared a day of mourning[10].

Zelensky called it an “exceptionally horrific strike” and said it showed Russia did not want to de-escalate[11]. He later said the follow-up weapon was a FAB-3000 bomb, a claim not independently confirmed[2].

Russian Strikes on Ukraine

Russia struck substations, transmission lines and power plants across 10 oblasts on November 3 with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones[1]. Energy company DTEK said three of its thermal plants stopped working after significant damage, and Ukrenergo’s chief described one of the largest waves of ballistic missiles on critical infrastructure[1]. Power cuts were imposed in Kyiv city and region and in Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv, Cherkasy and Kharkiv oblasts[1].

The Air Force said Russia launched 59 cruise missiles and 289 drones, plus ballistic missiles including Iskander-M, North Korean KN-23 and Zircon types, and that 49 cruise missiles, 257 drones and three ballistic missiles were downed[2]. The day before, the General Staff reported 171 drones and 10 Banderol missiles in a daytime attack[8]. On the evening of November 2, Zelensky had said intelligence showed Russia was preparing a new massive attack on energy and logistics[12].

A morning missile strike on Dnipro killed two people and injured 20 and damaged a hospital and a medical center, Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said[2]. In Kharkiv, an overnight attack hit a medical facility in the Nemyshlianskyi district, and Mayor Ihor Terekhov said about 200 patients would be moved[13]. Regional authorities reported at least 38 killed and 158 injured across Ukraine over the past day, including the Komyshuvakha toll[2].

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it struck energy sites in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions that it said powered Ukraine’s army and defense industry, plus port infrastructure in Odesa region[14].

Ukraine’s Strikes in Russia

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed 493 drones flew toward the Moscow area between 8:30 PM on November 2 and 7:30 AM on November 3 Moscow time, and said 187 were stopped as they approached the city[4]. TASS called it one of the largest attacks on Moscow in six months; it reported no damage[4].

The Slavneft-YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl, one of Russia’s largest, was reportedly hit, with three fires described by local residents, according to Ukrainian monitoring channels; this has not been verified[5].

Zelensky told PBS NewsHour that Ukraine hacked Russian emergency alert systems on November 2 in response to the hack of Ukraine’s Air Alert app[15].

Front Line and Casualty Claims

Ukraine’s General Staff reported 191 combat clashes on November 2, with the most assaults near Kostiantynivka (19) and Pokrovsk (12), plus 146 guided bombs dropped[16]. It also claimed 2,060 Russian troops killed or wounded over the past day[17]. Neither side’s figures can be verified.

Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) confirmed that a Su-57 jet was damaged by an engine fire at Akhtubinsk airfield on October 29, and suggested poor fuel quality linked to refinery strikes[18].

Talks and Diplomacy

Witkoff wrote on X that new trilateral talks among the United States, Ukraine and Russia will be held in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11, covering post-war security, de-escalation and humanitarian issues[3]. TASS relayed the announcement without a Kremlin response[19].

The White House said representatives of both countries will join Melania Trump at a November 5 event on the Oleshky ceasefire. A Ukrainian official told The Kyiv Independent the guests are Ukraine’s ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Russia’s Yana Lantratova, who is under US sanctions[20].

EU officials pushed back on a US-backed idea to restore Russian gas flows to Europe, and a Commission spokesperson said the bloc is phasing out Russian gas and LNG “regardless of what happens”[21].

Air Defense and NATO’s Flank

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said US Patriot resupply has been limited, and that Germany and the UK are drafting a roadmap for more air defense before a Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Brussels on November 17[6]. The Dutch defence minister said the Netherlands is looking at ways to speed up delivery of Patriot missiles under a US-approved sale[22].

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Zelensky would visit Berlin on November 3[23], and The Kyiv Independent later reported he had arrived for talks on air defense and energy[24].

Poland’s police chief said counterterrorism units were deployed in the Warmian-Masurian and Podlaskie regions after intelligence warnings of possible sabotage near the Russian border[7]. HUR said Russia’s Gerbera-2 drone can fly 1,200 km with a 25 kg warhead and noted one was found on Poland’s Baltic coast in September[25]. The Royal Navy said it tracked the Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov watching NATO drills off Scotland[26].

Domestic Affairs

Ukraine

Lt. Gen. Ivan Havryliuk, a former first deputy defense minister, was named head of Ukroboronprom, the state defense company, after an open competition[27].

Police denied social media reports of hostages after a standoff between residents and National Guard soldiers in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka near Kyiv; the National Guard said no one died[28].

Russia

Verstka reported a draft Defense Ministry order that would push December pay for troops not fighting in Ukraine into January 2027; the media outlet said the draft gives no reason[29].

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

Ukrainian officials say Russia bombed an aid site in Komyshuvakha and then struck rescuers and people in a shelter; Russia has not commented in the sources checked[10][9]. Strikes that damaged hospitals in Dnipro and a medical facility in Kharkiv are reported by Ukrainian officials[2][13]. Russia says it hit energy sites serving the military[14]. No court has ruled on these events.

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

Russia’s strikes ranged from the Zaporizhzhia front, about 20 km from Komyshuvakha, to power sites in western and central Ukraine[2][1]. Ukraine’s drones reached the Moscow area and Yaroslavl, northeast of the capital[4][5].

Military & Security

Russia mixed ballistic and cruise missiles with drones; Air Force figures show most cruise missiles and drones were downed but only three ballistic missiles[2]. Ukraine answered with a drone attack on Moscow that the city’s mayor described in the hundreds[4].

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Washington set Abu Dhabi talks for November 10–11 while Europeans work on air defense and resist bringing back Russian gas[3][6][21].

Economic & Industrial Power

Three thermal plants stopped working and outages spread across several oblasts[1]. In Russia, a draft order would delay some troop pay into January, and Bloomberg reported a wider budget deficit forecast[29].

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

HUR said Russia’s Gerbera-2 drone now has a 1,200 km range and a camera to spot interceptors[25]. Both sides used hacks of emergency alert systems, and Zelensky said Ukraine’s was a response[15].

Domestic Politics & Information

Zaporizhzhia region declared a day of mourning after the Komyshuvakha bombing[10]. A new head was named for Ukroboronprom[27].

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Assessment: Russia is pressing on Ukraine’s grid before talks, while Ukraine is relying on Europe to fill gaps in US Patriot supply[1][6]. US interests turn on whether the Abu Dhabi round can produce the energy ceasefire both sides have discussed[3].

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
Russia holds the edge in long-range strikes on Ukraine’s grid[1].
Critical vulnerability
Ukraine’s low interception rate against ballistic missiles[2].
Decisive uncertainty
Whether the Abu Dhabi talks lead to an energy ceasefire[3].
Likely trajectory
More strikes on energy by both sides in the week before the talks.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
