US Strikes on Qeshm Island

The first acknowledged US fire on Iranian soil in weeks came on Monday night. Citing a US official, Axios reported that a US fighter jet destroyed a Revolutionary Guards surface-to-air missile launcher on Qeshm Island in self-defense, after a Guards missile was fired at a US aircraft[1]. A US official described it as a defensive response to Iranian surface-to-air missile fire at US assets, and US officials told the Wall Street Journal that smaller strikes on Iranian targets have run for several weeks, kept quiet to avoid signaling a return to major combat[5][2].

Iranian state media reported the blasts before Washington confirmed them. IRNA reported five explosions on Qeshm Island, and Fars said explosions came from the sea at Bandar Lengeh in Hormozgan province; neither gave casualties or damage[6]. The Guards claimed, via Tasnim, that electronic warfare brought down two US MQM-170 drones south of Qeshm on Monday; the US military had rejected a similar Iranian claim last week, and has not commented on this one in the sources checked[7].

Trump played the action down. “We had a war with Iran. We won,” he told reporters on Monday[2]. On Tuesday he told Fox News US forces had hit a newly completed anti-aircraft installation watched for over two months, calling it “Just a minor attack. It wasn’t war”[8]. He also said the US may have to strike Pickaxe Mountain, a site linked to Iran’s nuclear program, while calling a deal a very good chance[3]. Brent crude rose 0.5% to $105.25 a barrel in Asian trading after the strike reports, Reuters data showed, having settled at $104.77 on Monday[4].

Talks Through Qatar, Threats From Tehran

Building on yesterday’s report of Iran’s two-day plan, both capitals signaled the channel is alive. Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that he and Trump feel good about the prospects for a negotiated settlement, that no deadline has been set and that Iran must make a verifiable commitment not to rebuild its nuclear program[9]. A Qatari delegation led by an adviser to the prime minister was expected in Tehran on Monday night, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported, citing a source[12]. On Tuesday, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said Washington and Tehran are studying proposals and called freedom of navigation non-negotiable[13].

Tehran paired that with threats. Qalibaf, who heads Iran’s negotiating team, told parliament that Iran had sent a firm and rational response, that its forces are at their highest defensive readiness and that any new US miscalculation would open a new battlefield[14]. Armed Forces chief of staff Maj. Gen. Abdollahi vowed a response without geographical limits and set five conditions, including an end to the wars in Lebanon and Gaza, full sanctions relief, war compensation and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over Hormuz[15]. A senior Iranian official told Reuters the two sides remain far apart[17].

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran holds no hostility toward Gulf Cooperation Council states, that dialogue with Saudi Arabia continues and that indirect talks were held in New York with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner through Qatar, though he denied any deal on direct talks[16]. Officials in Tehran denied that parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf (Qalibaf) had been sidelined after Vance wrote to Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei[18].

Gulf States and the Houthi Front

Some Arab states have warned Iran they could retaliate individually or collectively if it targets their infrastructure, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday[10]. Israel’s UN envoy Danny Danon denied that Netanyahu was pressing Trump to resume strikes and dismissed claims that a nuclear strike was under consideration, Iran International reported[11][10].

The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a drone over the Mecca region on Tuesday, a day after downing a ballistic missile and two drones fired by the Houthis (see Munitions Count)[19]. The US Mission in Saudi Arabia warned Americans of possible attacks on airports, airspace closures and flight cancellations, and urged extreme caution at Saudi airports[20]. Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman said he spoke with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about de-escalation and Houthi attacks on the kingdom[21].

In Yemen, army spokesman Majed al-Nuzaili claimed 951 operations in 24 hours that put about 332 Houthi commanders and fighters out of action on fronts including Al-Jawf, Marib and Al-Bayda; the figure has not been independently confirmed[22].

Israel, Gaza and the West Bank

Trump told Fox News that US financial aid to Israel, about $4 billion a year, will end by the end of the year under a deal he said he made with Netanyahu; Israeli officials had not confirmed it[23].

In Gaza, an Israeli strike on a gathering in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, killed one Palestinian and injured 11 on Tuesday, according to a Kuwait Hospital medical source; Gaza’s Interior Ministry said the target was Internal Security Service personnel[26]. In the West Bank, Israeli raids on Monday injured two Palestinians near Bethlehem, and troops demolished a memorial at Al-Lubban ash-Sharqiya, south of Nablus, according to the Palestine Red Crescent and local sources[28].

Domestic Affairs

In Iran, two men convicted over January’s protests in Isfahan were hanged, Iran International reported, naming them as Amirhossein Maleki and Amirhossein Ebrahimi; the judiciary-linked Mizan agency alleged they were armed[30]. A day earlier, activists said the families of three Isfahan detainees had been called for final visits; that report named the second man as Abolfazl Ebrahimi[29]. The IRGC-linked Fars agency said a police officer, Third Lieutenant Hojjat Vafakardeh, was killed in what it called a terrorist attack in Saravan, Sistan-Baluchestan[31].

In Israel, opposition leaders Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Lieberman, Yair Golan and Yair Lapid met in Herzliya on Tuesday and agreed to recommend Eisenkot to President Isaac Herzog and form a national emergency government[24]. Netanyahu’s bloc holds 53 of 120 Knesset seats, the opposition 48 and Arab parties 19, with Herzog’s consultations starting Wednesday[24]. Netanyahu said he is open to a broad government but insists on leading it and rejects one that relies on Arab parties[25]. In the United States, voting in the midterm elections is under way today.

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 1,599 Palestinians have been killed and 5,774 injured by Israeli fire since the October 10, 2025, ceasefire[26]. Gaza’s Education Ministry said Israeli attacks killed at least 14 school students aged 6 to 16 and eight education workers in October[27]. Gaza’s Interior Ministry said Tuesday’s al-Mawasi strike was the second on police personnel in three days[26]. A Palestinian government commission counted 3,133 attacks by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank in October, up 52.8% from September, as reported yesterday[28].

Rights activists cited by Iran International said the Isfahan protest detainees faced execution after final family visits; Iranian authorities said the Supreme Court upheld the sentences[29][30]. These are allegations and claims by the named parties; no court outside Iran has ruled on them.

What to Watch (Assessment)

  • Any US or Iranian account of further strikes or launches around Qeshm and the Strait of Hormuz[2].
  • Washington’s answer to the Iranian response Qalibaf says was delivered[14].
  • Results of the Qatari delegation’s talks in Tehran[12][13].
  • More Houthi drones and missiles toward western Saudi Arabia and any airport disruption[19][20].
  • President Herzog’s consultations on who forms Israel’s next government, starting Wednesday[24].

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

Qeshm Island and Bandar Lengeh sit on the Strait of Hormuz, so the night’s fire took place on the shipping chokepoint itself[6]. Abdollahi tied Iran’s claimed status to its control of the strait[15].

Military & Security

The US says its strike was defensive and limited, and US officials describe weeks of quiet, small strikes rather than a resumed campaign[5]. Iran’s drone claims remain unverified[7].

Score 3/5Evidence confidence: MediumTrend: Escalating

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Qatar is carrying messages both ways, and Araghchi courted the Gulf states while Gulf capitals reportedly warned Tehran of joint retaliation[13][16][10].

Economic & Industrial Power

Oil moved only slightly on the strike reports, with Brent near $105[4]. Treasury posted no new Iran sanctions in the window[32].

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

The clash centered on air defense: a Guards surface-to-air launcher hit by a US jet, and Guards claims that electronic warfare downed MQM-170 drones[1][7].

Domestic Politics & Information

Tehran keeps executing January protest detainees while denying splits in its negotiating team[30][18]. Israel’s opposition has a candidate but not a majority without Arab parties[24].

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Assessment: Trump is using the Pickaxe Mountain threat and limited strikes as pressure while saying a deal is likely, and Tehran answers with conditions and threats of a wider war[3][15]. Neither side has yet shown it will move first.

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
The United States controls the pace of strikes and keeps its naval blockade[5].
Critical vulnerability
Small, unannounced exchanges around Qeshm could escalate faster than talks through Qatar can move[2][13].
Decisive uncertainty
Whether Washington accepts the response Tehran says it sent[14].
Likely trajectory
More limited clashes in the strait alongside continued mediation.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
