Iran War Update Oct 24, 2026: Weekend Strike Talk, Iran Plot Warning
Iran war update: a US envoy floats a weekend strike, US intelligence warns of Iran plots, and Israel opens a Hebron operation.
Key Takeaways: 5 things to know
- US ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said a strike on Iran could “absolutely” come this weekend, and Trump said he knew nothing about it (see Barrack Raises Weekend Strike Talk).
- The US intelligence chief told Secretary Rubio that Iranian plots against Americans have reached advanced stages, as four embassies cut staff (see US Warns of Iranian Plots as Embassies Cut Staff).
- Iranian officials threatened Gulf undersea cables, and the Revolutionary Guards said mines disabled two supertankers carrying more than 4.5 million barrels (see Iran Threatens Cables and Claims New Mine Hits).
- Israel said two soldiers were killed near Hebron and launched a days-long operation, revising yesterday’s report of five Israelis wounded (see Israel Opens Hebron Operation).
- Gunmen killed at least seven people at a church funeral in Jordan’s Karak governorate, and Reuters later reported eight dead (see Jordan Hunts Church Attackers).

The October 22 total of 11 drones updates the four listed yesterday; the two October 23 drones may overlap with it, as no times were given. Central Command and Israel released no counts.
In this October 24 Iran war update, a US ambassador said a strike on Iran could come this weekend,[1] the US intelligence chief warned that Iranian plots against Americans are advanced,[2] and Israel began a Hebron operation after two soldiers were killed (see yesterday’s Iran war update and the War Room).[3]
Barrack Raises Weekend Strike Talk as Washington Weighs Post-Midterm Plans
“Could there be a strike this weekend? Absolutely,” Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey and envoy for Syria, told podcast host Mario Nawfal during a visit to the Gulf.[19] Barrack has no direct role on Iran. He said the president is open to a deal, but warned that continued threats against the Gulf would bring “a consequence,” adding: “The consequence won’t be regime change.” That puts him at odds with Netanyahu’s calls for overthrowing Iran’s government.
President Trump distanced himself from the timing. “That was my ambassador? He’s a pretty powerful man, I guess. If that’s the case, I don’t know anything about it,” he told reporters in Florida.[20] He has said strikes would not come before the November 3 midterms, but on Friday he said “we may do another little Epic Fury,” the name of the US operation launched in February, without giving timing.[21]
The Atlantic reported that Trump is considering several days of strikes after the midterms on Iran’s missile and drone arsenal, energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities, and ABC News reported that US and Israeli planners have drawn up plans.[22] Officials have not announced a decision.
UN Ambassador Mike Waltz framed the alternative. “The president and the US Navy can maintain this blockade for the foreseeable future,” he told the Financial Times, and said US goals include dealing with Iran’s highly enriched uranium.[23]
US Warns of Iranian Plots as Embassies Cut Staff
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton sent Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio a memo on October 23 warning that his teams “have received intelligence that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel.”[24] “The lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries,” Clayton wrote. A US official confirmed to The Jerusalem Post that Rubio received it, with a copy to CIA Director John Ratcliffe.[25]
The State Department is reducing staff at the US embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, three US officials said, and linked the change to threats from Iran and the Houthis.[26] The four embassies remain open and staff are not required to leave. That differs from Saudi Arabia, where nonessential personnel and their families were ordered out on Wednesday. “The threat of Houthi attacks and of Iranian terror plots targeting US officials are informing our decisions,” a US official said.[27]
The US Embassy in Doha said the Qatar travel advisory was updated on October 23 to reflect “an increase in potential armed attacks by the Iranian-supported Houthis,” and that government employees now need special authorization to travel there.[28] The advisory level did not change.
Iran Threatens Cables and Claims New Mine Hits in Hormuz
Tehran answered with threats against infrastructure. Two Iranian security officials told Reuters that Iran has drawn up detailed plans to target undersea communications cables in the Gulf if attacked, and would try to prevent repairs.[29] “If Iran is attacked, there will be no more red lines … from undersea cables to military bases, including covert ones,” one said.[30] Data from TeleGeography shows less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through the strait, so the main risk is to Gulf networks.
Iran’s armed forces chief, Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi, set a wider line on Saturday. “We will not allow U.S. military ships in the Persian Gulf under any circumstances and at any time,” he said, adding that Trump “will take that dream to his grave.”[31]
At sea, the Guards’ navy said two supertankers carrying more than 4.5 million barrels of crude struck mines early Friday on what it calls an “unauthorized” southern route, and that their crews abandoned them.[32] No ship owner, insurer or navy confirmed the claim, and the vessels were not named. Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations center, known as UKMTO, said a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile at 17:15 UTC (1:15 PM ET) on October 22, 7 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman, based on a delayed report.[33]
The UAE Climate Ministry said it is containing an oil spill off Umm Al Quwain, north of Dubai, and closed the emirate’s beaches.[34]
Eight Ministers Warn Against New Strikes as Iran Turns to Moscow
The Istanbul meeting produced a joint warning rather than a plan. Foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt and Italy met on Friday.[35] “We are all in agreement that a new attack on Iran would expand the war in the region,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said. “A military intervention on Iran is not in any way a solution. Nobody approves this at the moment.”[36] French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said a new escalation “would create nothing but losers” and called on both sides to show “the utmost restraint.”[37] Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met Iran’s president in Tehran on Tuesday, while Pakistani troops help defend Saudi Arabia.[38]
Turkey also opened a legal front. An Istanbul court on Friday began the trial in absentia of 35 Israelis, including Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz and military chief Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, over the interception of a Gaza aid flotilla, and upheld their arrest warrants.[39]
Tehran is also turning to Moscow. President Masoud Pezeshkian will meet Vladimir Putin at a summit of gas-exporting countries on Tuesday, October 27, Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, told the Tasnim agency.[40]
Houthi Missiles Keep Targeting Saudi Cities
The Saudi-led coalition reported more Houthi fire on October 23. Spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said air defenses destroyed a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh and two drones launched at the south of the country.[41] A second statement said a ballistic missile fired at Khamis Mushait, in the southwest, was also intercepted.[42] Neither statement reported damage or casualties.
The coalition’s full tally for October 22 was larger than reported yesterday. It said it destroyed 11 drones and a ballistic missile headed for Najran.[43] AFP described the kingdom as under near-daily Houthi attack this month.[44] The coalition has not said where the drones were launched from. Inside Yemen, fierce fighting resumed between government forces and the Houthis on the eastern front around Taiz, and a military source told Al Jazeera that the Houthis attacked al-Maqatra Castle in Lahij governorate.[45]
Israel Opens Hebron Operation After Two Soldiers Are Killed
The Israeli military updated the toll from Friday’s attack. Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, were killed at the Judea Junction checkpoint near Hebron, and three other soldiers were lightly injured.[46] This replaces yesterday’s figure of five Israelis wounded. Channel 14, however, put one of the wounded in serious condition.[47] Soldiers killed both attackers, who were from Hebron.
Netanyahu visited Hebron and announced the response. Forces “will enter the neighborhood from which the terrorists came, evacuate the residents, go from house to house, and destroy the terrorist infrastructure,” he said, according to his office.[48] He said he and the defense minister are considering an operation “such as has not been carried out since the Six Day War,” adding, “it is on the way.” The military described a “targeted” campaign lasting “several days,” plus operations in “dozens” of other West Bank areas.[49]
The operation is already under way. Channel 14 reported that the civil administration and the military’s Central Command began demolishing what they called illegal structures near the attack site on Friday.[50] The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society said about 70 Palestinians were arrested across the West Bank since Friday, and about 300 families are being displaced from Hebron’s al-Jalda neighborhood and the Ein Deir Bahha area.[51]
Jordan Hunts Church Attackers as Lebanon Tracks Explosives
Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at St. George’s Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak governorate, on Friday. A security source first told state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka that at least seven people were killed and about 10 wounded.[52] Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, as quoted by the US Embassy, later reported seven dead and 27 injured.[53] Reuters put the toll at eight killed and 40 wounded on Saturday, and these accounts have not yet been reconciled.[54] No group claimed the attack. “This is a result of a terrorist ideology and blind extremism,” Prime Minister Jafar Hassan wrote on X, and King Abdullah said the attackers would be punished “with an iron fist.”[55]
Lebanon’s front stayed active at a lower level. An Israeli strike hit the Ali al-Taher ridge on Friday, artillery fell on Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh, Mayfadoun, Baraashit and Wadi Slouqi, and detonations were reported in al-Khiam overnight, Lebanese media said.[56] An unverified report in the Nidaa al-Watan newspaper said seven more trucks used the Dahr al-Baidar road besides the one seized with explosives.[57]
Domestic Affairs
No killings of Revolutionary Guards, Basij, Quds Force or regular army personnel were reported in the sources checked for this window.[58] The Guards did report one offensive action. They said a “preemptive operation” struck one of the most important gathering and training centers of PJAK, a Kurdish militant group, without naming the location or giving casualties.[59] The Intelligence Ministry and the Guards’ ground force said they arrested two “espionage operatives” in Kermanshah province and seized 10 Starlink terminals, 10 AK-47 rifles and 5,200 rounds of ammunition.[60]
Residents of Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Dezful, Hamedan and other cities told Iran International that armed Basij members and riot police now stand at major intersections. They also described new checkpoints and sharply slower internet.[61] The outlet said the accounts cannot all be verified.
The southeast is a growing strain. The rights group HRANA documented at least 63 armed incidents in Sistan and Baluchestan and neighboring Kerman province between March 31 and October 10, leaving at least 94 dead, with 18 attacks in the 18 days to October 10.[62] Several Baluch groups, including Jaish al-Adl, joined in December 2025 under the People’s Fighters Front.
Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani published a note titled “Iran will not be destroyed by threats,” saying Iran needs no power’s permission to defend itself.[63] She said the government speaks of peace “with a sense of responsibility,” which should not be mistaken for hesitation.
In Israel, the attack near Hebron came four days before Tuesday’s vote, and the government had warned of attacks by the country’s “enemies” before the election, AP reported.[64] National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is also a defendant in the Istanbul flotilla case.[65]
War Crimes and Civilian Harm
Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.
Gaza’s health ministry said hospitals received eight bodies and 62 wounded over 48 hours, and another person died of earlier wounds, bringing its count since October 2023 to 74,540 killed and 175,678 injured, up from 74,498 killed cited yesterday.[66] The rise is larger than the new deaths listed, and the report as relayed does not explain the gap. It counts 1,547 killed since the October 2025 ceasefire; the figures do not distinguish fighters from civilians. The Israeli rights group B’Tselem warned that the Hebron plans amount to “collective punishment and acts that could constitute war crimes.”[67] The Palestinian Authority says more than 40,000 West Bank residents have been displaced since early 2025.[68]
In Yemen, “It’s 20 days and counting since Taiz has been cut off,” said Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN humanitarian office, OCHA. More than 800,000 people have been cut off from aid since the Houthis encircled the city.[69] The Karak victims were mourners at a funeral.

What to Watch (Assessment)
- Whether any US strike comes this weekend, as Barrack suggested, or after the November 3 midterms.
- Further US embassy drawdowns or ordered departures beyond Saudi Arabia.
- Owner, insurer or navy confirmation of the two supertankers the Guards say were mined.
- The scale and length of the Hebron operation before Israel’s October 27 election.
- Jordan’s final death toll from Karak and any claim of responsibility.
- Pezeshkian’s October 27 meeting with Putin in Moscow and any Russian mediation offer.
Geography & Strategic Position
Iran’s armed forces chief says no US warship will enter the Gulf, while Tehran keeps targeting ships on the southern lane near Oman.[4] Violence is also spreading inland, to southern Jordan and to Hebron (see Israel Opens Hebron Operation).
Military & Security
Reports say US and Israeli planners have drawn up strike plans for after the November 3 midterms, and a US ambassador said a strike could come this weekend.[5] Iran answered with plans against Gulf undersea cables and a fresh claim that mines disabled two supertankers (see Iran Threatens Cables and Claims New Mine Hits).
Alliances & Diplomatic Networks
Eight countries that are mostly US partners, among them Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Saudi Arabia, told Washington in Istanbul that a new attack on Iran would widen the war.[6] Pezeshkian meets Putin in Moscow on October 27 (see Eight Ministers Warn Against New Strikes).
Economic & Industrial Power
UN Ambassador Mike Waltz said the US Navy can keep the blockade of Iran’s ports going for the foreseeable future, and that economic pressure will keep tightening.[7] Gulf states bear costs too, as a tanker spill closed beaches in the UAE (see Iran Threatens Cables and Claims New Mine Hits).
Technology & Critical Infrastructure
Two Iranian security officials told Reuters that Tehran has detailed plans to cut Gulf undersea cables and to block repairs if attacked.[8] The main risk is to regional networks, not the global internet (see Iran Threatens Cables and Claims New Mine Hits).
Domestic Politics & Information
Israel votes on Tuesday, October 27, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised the largest West Bank operation since 1967.[9] In Iran, residents describe more armed patrols and slower internet, and the government spokeswoman said threats will not destroy the country (see Domestic Affairs).[10]
Strategic Leverage & Outcomes
Washington controls the timing of any new strikes and keeps the blockade on Iran’s oil trade.[11] Tehran’s leverage is the threat to shipping, cables and US personnel, which is already shrinking the US diplomatic presence in four Arab states (see US Warns of Iranian Plots as Embassies Cut Staff).
Strategic assessment
- Relative advantage
- The United States can choose when to strike and can sustain the blockade without a deal.
- Critical vulnerability
- US diplomats, Gulf infrastructure and shipping lanes remain exposed to Iranian and Houthi attack.
- Decisive uncertainty
- Whether strikes come this weekend, after the US midterms, or not at all.
- Likely trajectory
- More threats and ship incidents in the strait, a larger West Bank operation and further Houthi fire at Saudi Arabia.
- Strategic outcome
- Not yet determinable; the Istanbul talks produced no agreement and US-Iran talks remain stalled.
