This disinformation and fact check update for November 5, 2026, leads with Iran’s claim that three vessels caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, a Russian-installed Luhansk casualty claim without Kyiv confirmation, and a wave of false midterm posts about Trump, Ken Paxton, Michigan tabulators and Niagara Falls.[1][2][3] It follows the November 4 information war update; the War Room gives context. Media Lies and Propaganda by Country

Iran

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) claimed three vessels — described in Iranian reporting as two oil tankers and a tug — caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after using an unauthorized route.[4] ? Unproven Rebuttal: opened sources for this window do not show independent ship names, flag-state confirmations or matching UKMTO casualty reports for the same three hulls; a separate UKMTO warning described two unidentified projectiles hitting a tanker about 50 nm north of Qatar, a different location and mechanism.[5] Today’s Iran War Update carries the operational detail.

Russia

Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-installed governor in Luhansk, claimed seven people were killed and 14 injured in attacks on vehicles in Russian-controlled Luhansk.[6] ? Unproven Rebuttal: the toll and attacker identity rest on the installed administration’s word; opened Ukrainian sources for this window did not confirm the incident as stated. Context is in today’s Ukraine War Update.

China

Opened sources for this window did not surface a new, checkable Chinese state false claim distinct from routine diplomatic messaging; TaiwanPlus reported Taipei accusing Beijing of an APEC protocol breach ahead of Shenzhen, which is a dispute over protocol rather than a verified fabricated casualty claim. Label: Not assessed as a media lie in this edition pending primary texts.

North Korea

No new North Korean state media false claim with an independent rebuttal appeared in opened sources for this window beyond yesterday’s Kim Yo Jong dialogue framing already covered in the Indo-Pacific edition.

Other

Viral English-language midterm fakes — a fabricated Trump Truth Social offer of Canadian “associate membership,” a fake Ken Paxton concession-rejection statement, a Michigan foreign Wi-Fi tabulator alert without evidence, and a Niagara Falls “blue wave” lighting claim — are treated in the Fact-checks table below rather than as foreign-state propaganda.[7][8][9][10]

Cyber Front

Opened sources for this window did not add a new government cyber attribution comparable to yesterday’s Binance/North Korea account. Michigan election officials rejected a foreign Wi-Fi tabulator claim without evidence, keeping the cyber angle tied to election-integrity rumor control rather than a confirmed intrusion.[17] CISA’s news page returned HTTP 403 on one attempt.[18]

Domestic Affairs

US election rumor control continued a day after Democrats took Congress, with fake concession and celebration posts circulating faster than official clarifications.[33][34]

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

This edition records attributed casualty claims from Luhansk and does not reach legal conclusions.[35]

Statements

United States statements come first; statements by other governments, companies and state-linked voices follow and are labeled. Quotes are verbatim and attributed.

What to Watch

  • Independent identification of any Hormuz fire vessels named by Iran.
  • Ukrainian response, if any, to the Luhansk vehicle-attack claim.
  • Further post-midterm fabricated statements attributed to losing candidates.
  • CISA or FBI notices once HTML access returns.

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

Hormuz and Qatar waters again hosted competing maritime narratives, while Michigan and Niagara became midterm rumor nodes in North America.[19][20][21][22]

Military & Security

Iranian and Russian installed authorities pushed casualty and fire claims that still lack independent confirmation in opened sources.[23][24]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

False Canada–US “associate membership” content sought to insert an alliance storyline that Trump’s account did not publish.[25]

Economic & Industrial Power

No new sanctions-disinformation package beyond Trade War/Middle East Outcast coverage appeared as a viral false claim in opened fact-checks for this window.[26]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

The Michigan tabulator Wi-Fi rumor targeted election hardware trust; state officials denied any inquiry trail matching the claim.[27]

Domestic Politics & Information

Post-midterm fakes about Paxton, Niagara and Trump posts show domestic rumor mills still inventing concession and celebration narratives a day after the vote.[28][29][30]

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

State-linked unproven maritime and Luhansk claims sit beside domestic election fakes; US interests turn on keeping official tallies and maritime agencies more trusted than viral screenshots.[31][32]
