This Africa security update for November 5, 2026, covers Sudan’s reported reciprocal closure of Ethiopia’s consulate in Gedaref, South Africa’s local elections, a Nigerian court ruling against Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy, an attack on Peter Obi’s convoy and President Trump’s intent to terminate Rwanda and South Africa from AGOA.[1][2][3][4] It follows the November 4 Africa update; the War Room gives context. Related same-day: Trade War.
Sudan and Ethiopia
Sudanese media reported that Khartoum ordered the closure of Ethiopia’s consulate in Gedaref and gave Ethiopian diplomats 48 hours to leave, citing reciprocity after Ethiopia closed Sudan’s Assosa consulate and ordered six Sudanese officials out.[18] Anadolu cited Al-Zawiya Net and Tayba TV; Ethiopian authorities had not publicly explained Tuesday’s Assosa decision in opened sources for that window.
The tit-for-tat fits a wider deterioration that includes Sudanese army claims of drones entering from Ethiopia and Khartoum’s earlier complaints to the UN Security Council and the African Union, covered in prior Africa editions; Ethiopia has accused Sudan of backing Tigray rebels.[19]
South Africa
Voting ended in South Africa’s local elections after polls ran from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time, Anadolu reported.[20] The Independent Electoral Commission said more than 29 million people registered at about 23,700 stations and that about 12 million had cast ballots by 5 p.m. local; completed official results were expected Thursday or Friday. Voters interviewed by Anadolu cited water, sewage and crime. Contenders include the ANC, DA, EFF, IFP and former President Jacob Zuma’s MK Party in its first local contest.[21]
Nigeria
A Federal High Court under Justice Peter Lifu nullified Atiku Abubakar’s presidential candidacy for the African Democratic Congress and invalidated the Mark-led national executive, Anadolu reported on Thursday.[22] The ADC said it would appeal. Separately, attackers with machetes and sticks smashed windshields on opposition figure Peter Obi’s convoy in Calabar after a palace visit; Cross River State Police said they arrested a 27-year-old suspect.[23]
On security governance, 28 state legislatures backed a constitutional amendment to allow state police alongside the federal force, clearing the two-thirds threshold of 24 assemblies; the National Assembly clerk said records were verified for transmission toward President Bola Tinubu.[24]
AGOA and Trade
Ambassador Jamieson Greer said President Trump notified Congress and the governments of Rwanda and South Africa of his intent to terminate their AGOA eligibility after the annual interagency review.[25][26] Today’s Trade War update carries the preference-program detail; termination, if completed, would take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
Domestic Affairs
Nigeria’s 2027 presidential calendar and South Africa’s municipal count dominate opened domestic political coverage for this window; no new US Africa Command public release appeared after a 403 on the AFRICOM press page.[27][28][29]
War Crimes and Civilian Harm
Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.
This edition records attributed diplomatic and political-violence claims and does not reach legal conclusions. Opened sources did not add a newly verified mass-casualty figure for the Nov 4–5 window beyond prior Sudan drone-infrastructure allegations already attributed in earlier reports.[30][31]

Related War Room Reports
Geography & Strategic Position
Sudan–Ethiopia border diplomacy collapsed into matching consulate closures at Assosa and Gedaref while South Africa and Nigeria held contested political events inland.[5][6][7]
Military & Security
Khartoum’s move followed army claims of drones entering from Ethiopia and earlier UN warnings on infrastructure strikes; Nigeria’s National Assembly advanced state-police constitutional reform amid banditry and kidnapping debates.[8][9]
Alliances & Diplomatic Networks
Washington notified Kigali and Pretoria of AGOA termination intent, linking trade preference status to worker rights, rule of law and related criteria in the annual review.[10]
Economic & Industrial Power
Losing AGOA on Jan. 1, 2027, if finalized, would strip preferential US market access from Rwanda and South Africa exporters that still rely on the preference program.[11]
Technology & Critical Infrastructure
Opened sources for this window did not add a new verified Africa cyber or space incident; prior Sudan drone-infrastructure claims remain attributed, not independently verified here.[12]
