This disinformation and fact check update for November 1, 2026, leads with state media claims: an Iranian agency blamed US jets for strikes its own source did not attribute, Taiwan rejected Beijing’s account of a coast guard patrol, and the FBI named North Korea in the Binance theft.[1][2][3] It follows the October 31 information war update; the War Room and the Information War News Hub give context.

Media Lies and Propaganda by Country

Iran

Mehr News Agency, an Iranian state-affiliated outlet, ran the headline “US fighter jets carry out airstrikes on Syria’s Homs.” ! Misleading Rebuttal: the Al-Mayadeen report that Mehr relayed described the aircraft as unidentified, and no government claimed the strikes south of Al-Sukhnah in the sources checked.[4]

Mehr reported a large fire at an industrial facility in Dammam “following a reported Yemeni attack.” ? Unproven Rebuttal: Saudi authorities had not confirmed an attack in the sources checked, and Mehr gave no evidence of one.[5] Today’s Iran War Update covers both incidents.

China

A China Coast Guard spokesman said the vessel Hushi led “routine law enforcement patrols” east of Taiwan.[6] Label: Disputed. Rebuttal: Taiwan’s coast guard said radio messages to ships during the patrol were “a clear expansion of power that violate international law” and that China has no jurisdiction over Taiwan’s waters.[7] Today’s China Taiwan News report covers the patrol.

Russia

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told state television that “Putin has never refused to talk” with Zelensky and that Zelensky is “free to come” to Moscow.[8] It is a statement of position with no checkable factual claim, so it is not labeled.

Ukraine

A Wall Street Journal report on October 29 said Ukraine had agreed to pause strikes on Russian oil refineries until after the US midterms. Label: Disputed. Rebuttal: Ukrainian officials told The Kyiv Independent that Kyiv never agreed to a pause, though a senior official said US envoy Jared Kushner had suggested one; drones struck the Novokuibyshevsk refinery less than a day after the report.[9] Today’s Ukraine War Update covers the refinery strikes.

Cuba and North Korea

No false claim by Cuban or North Korean officials or state media with a documented rebuttal was found in the sources checked; Cuban state media could not be reached. Today’s Americas Security Update covers Havana.

Cyber Front

The FBI said in a cyber alert that North Korea was “responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets” from Binance on or about October 29, naming the TraderTraitor operation.[14] The FBI said North Korean hackers converted stolen Binance funds mainly into Ethereum and urged exchanges to block their wallets.[15] Asked about it at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump said, “We don’t know if it’s North Korea, but if it is, we’ll talk to North Korea about it.”[16] The Quad also pledged to map semiconductor supply chain chokepoints and to secure undersea data cables.[17] CISA added no new exploited flaws to its catalog on October 31 or November 1.[18]

Domestic Affairs

United States

With the November 3 midterms two days away, the false Trump post came from an account that Lead Stories said uses stock imagery and a made-up “University of Arkansas College” biography.[19]

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

No war crimes or civilian harm tied to information operations were reported in this window. The Quad statement condemned criminal groups that traffic people into scam centers and force them to defraud victims.[20]

United States statements come first; statements by other governments, companies and state-linked voices follow and are labeled. Quotes are verbatim and attributed.

What to Watch

  • Whether Saudi Arabia confirms or denies an attack in Dammam.[25]
  • Whether more AI-made images about candidates spread before the November 3 midterms.[26]
  • Whether exchanges freeze the wallets the FBI tied to North Korea.[27]

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

This analysis applies the Seven Lenses of Geopolitical Power to the day’s information fights.[28]

Geography & Strategic Position

Two of the day’s state media claims concern places far from Iran, in Syria and Saudi Arabia, letting Tehran’s outlets shape stories it does not have to prove.[29][30]

Military & Security

China’s patrol east of Taiwan pairs a physical presence with a legal message, and the label “law enforcement” is itself the claim in dispute.[31][32]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

The Quad’s pledge on undersea cables treats data links as shared allied infrastructure.[33]

Economic & Industrial Power

At more than $6 billion, the theft the FBI attributed to North Korea would be a large inflow for a heavily sanctioned economy.[34]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

Cheap AI images continue to drive viral fakes, and detection tools, not the platforms, supplied the evidence in the Iowa case.[35]

Domestic Politics & Information

The refinery-pause dispute shows how a single unnamed-source report can become a political issue in Kyiv and Washington within days.[36]

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Casualty claims from both armies serve morale and cannot be verified, so they work as information weapons more than as data.[37][38]

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
Governments that answer state claims on the record, as Taiwan’s coast guard did.
Critical vulnerability
Headlines that go further than the reports beneath them, as in Mehr’s Homs story.
Decisive uncertainty
Whether US talks with North Korea follow the Binance attribution.
Likely trajectory
More election-season fakes in the United States through November 3.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
