This disinformation and fact check update for October 31, 2026, leads with media lies and state propaganda: an EU monitor rebutted the Kremlin’s denial that Russia holds political prisoners, a fake German news video was tied to a Russian operation, and Iran repeated an unproven drone claim.[1][2][3] It follows the October 30 information war update; the War Room and the Information War News Hub give context.

Media Lies and Propaganda by Country

Russia

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow “categorically” denies that Russia holds any political prisoners. ✗ False Rebuttal: EUvsDisinfo, the EU’s East StratCom monitor, said on October 30 that Memorial’s political prisoner project recognizes 1,825 people held in 336 institutions across 78 regions, using the Council of Europe’s definition, and that UN bodies, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch do not treat Russia’s counter-claim about “political prisoners” in Ukraine as such.[4]

An X account calling itself “American Pulse” posted a video with a FOCUS Online logo saying a German “Eco Sanitation Act” will limit people to three flushes a day by 2027. ✗ False Rebuttal: Lead Stories found that FOCUS Online never reported it, said the audio was AI-generated, and said the video appears to be part of the Russian influence operation Storm-1516, with captions aimed at US midterm voters.[5]

China

Iran

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, via the state news agency IRNA, claimed they brought down and captured a US MQM-170 drone intact near Qeshm Island using electronic warfare, the second such claim in two days. ? Unproven Rebuttal: US Central Command spokesman Capt. North Korea

North Korea’s foreign ministry called the 11-nation sanctions statement a Western “strategic failure” in a statement carried by KCNA; it is rhetoric with no checkable factual claim, so it is not labeled.[7]

Cyber Front

CISA added two exploited flaws in Ivanti Connect Secure to its must-patch catalog on October 30, with federal deadlines of November 2 and November 13.[11][12] Binance said it reserved more than $6.34 billion to cover user losses and that about $3 billion had been frozen; TRM Labs put the frozen amount at about $2.7 billion, and the two figures have not been reconciled.[13][14]

Domestic Affairs

Japan’s Foreign Ministry said about 3,600 sets of names and email addresses may have been exposed after a third party stole login credentials for an email service; confidential networks and passport systems were not affected.[15] In the United States, the “American Pulse” posts paired the German fake with US midterm hashtags, Lead Stories found.[16]
