IRGC Says Iran’s 2,000 km Missile Range Limit Is Lifted
IRGC spokesman Gen. Hossein Mohebbi said Nov. 7 that Iran’s self-imposed 2,000 km (1,200-mile) ballistic missile range limit has been lifted. He gave no new range.

TEHRAN — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Nov. 7, 2026, that its self-imposed 2,000-kilometer (1,200-mile) limit on ballistic missile range “has been lifted,” the Associated Press reported via CBS News.
IRGC spokesman Gen. Hossein Mohebbi said at a Tehran press conference that Iran would “demonstrate these capabilities in practice” rather than make statements. He did not say whether Iran has missiles that can fly farther, The Times of Israel reported.
What the limit covered
The 2,000-kilometer range takes in parts of Greece and the Balkans, the entire Arabian Peninsula, the Levant and most of Egypt, the AP reported. Iran is not known to have missiles beyond that range, the AP said, though U.S. officials have said Iran’s space program technology could be repurposed for intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Despite the stated cap, Iran reportedly tried and failed in March to hit the joint U.S.-U.K. base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, about 4,000 kilometers away, The Times of Israel reported.
Why now
The statement followed a message attributed to Iran’s supreme leader, whom the AP and The Times of Israel name as Mojtaba Khomeini, saying any threat from the U.S. or Israel would face a response without geographic limits.
NBC News reported, citing two unnamed U.S. officials, that some advisers told Trump to restart major combat before the new Congress is sworn in in January. That report is unconfirmed, and a Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment, The Times of Israel said.
What to watch
Assessment: With no new missile shown and no range given, the change is so far declaratory. A long-range test launch, or a satellite launch on a new booster, would be the first concrete sign that Iran is acting on it.
