Official counts and claims, November 4, ~7:30 AM ET, to November 5, ~7:30 AM ET. Central Command published no Iran strike figures in the sources checked; n/a means the source gave no figure.
In this November 5 Iran war news update, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said two tankers and a tugboat caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, Vice President JD Vance blamed the war for Republican midterm losses, and the US Treasury sanctioned an India-based maritime fraud network tied to Iran’s shadow fleet (see yesterday’s Iran war update and the War Room).
Guards Report Fresh Fires in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Thursday that two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in separate incidents after vessels tried to use what it called an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz[28]. In a statement carried by IRNA, the Guards said a large tanker struck a mine Wednesday night on a southern route, caught fire and stopped, and that another supertanker caught fire while leaving the eastern strait; a tug that approached to fight the blaze also burned[29].
The same statement said the navy’s electronic-warfare unit had taken control of two Lucas-type aircraft described as intruding, and accused the United States of encouraging ships to use a mined route[30]. Separately, Iran’s navy said an oil tanker that had switched off identification and navigation systems struck a mine in the eastern strait and caught fire, repeating that the waterway is unsafe and closed without coordination[31].
No ship owner, flag state or independent maritime agency named the vessels or confirmed the Iranian accounts in the sources checked. The UK Maritime Trade Operations did report a verified incident about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, at 2320 GMT Wednesday, saying a tanker was struck by two unidentified projectiles; crew condition, damage and any environmental impact were still unconfirmed[32]. The war.gov feed carried no Iran strike item, and Central Command’s news page returned an error on one attempt[33][34].
On Wednesday the Guards also claimed air defenses shot down a US MQ-1 drone over Qeshm Island, a claim that drew no US military reply in the opened sources[35].
Vance Blames the War as Trump Defends It
Vice President JD Vance wrote on X that “The reason we lost is the war,” telling critics that any honest debate about next steps must start from the midterm defeat, including the loss of both chambers of Congress[36][37]. Speaking to reporters, Trump said Vance’s reading was “largely true,” pointed to higher gasoline prices and added: “We had no choice. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon”[38]. Asked when he would end the war, Trump said: “Whenever I wanted to. But it’s got to be done right, because they can’t have a nuclear weapon”[39].
Iran International reported that senior officials are debating whether to escalate strikes or keep economic pressure while talks continue, and that Vance has favored a diplomatic path even while defending the administration in public[40]. Democratic leaders, after taking both chambers, said they would push to end the war and ease living costs[41].
Treasury Hits a False-Flag Network and Iranian Airline Support
On November 4 the Treasury Department, under Operation Economic Outcast, designated India-based Suniel Kumar Sharma, his spouse Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, related Indian companies and directors, and Türkiye-based Fugo Ground Services Inc[42]. Treasury said Sharma’s network sold false flags and certifications that let sanctioned tankers — including ships working for Iran’s military and proxies — keep moving Iranian oil, using websites that impersonated registries for countries including Guyana, Eswatini and Laos[43].
Fugo, Treasury said, provides ground handling to several US-designated Iranian airlines that still fly to Türkiye, including Iran Air Tour and Saha Airlines[44]. Secretary Scott Bessent said: “As we have said many times, under Operation Economic Outcast, you are either with us or against us”[45]. The designations freeze US assets and generally bar Americans from dealing with the targets; OFAC also warned industry about the risk of dealing with falsely flagged vessels[46][47].
Oman Talks, South Korea’s Cheonghae Push and a Russia Arms Report
Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi discussed regional developments by phone Thursday and, according to Oman News Agency, stressed moving beyond de-escalation toward practical arrangements that protect shipping, end the state of war and prevent renewed fighting[48]. Qatar’s mediation channel remained the backdrop; no new deal was announced[49].
South Korea’s Defense Ministry said it plans to extend the Cheonghae anti-piracy unit’s operating area toward the southern tip of Oman’s Duqm Port, about 650 kilometers from Hormuz, and to add 75 personnel plus a P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, subject to Cabinet, presidential and National Assembly approval[50]. President Lee Jae Myung has ruled out combat troops that would draw Seoul into the war[51].
The Financial Times reported that Russian production schedules listed an export order for 90 APU-L helicopter launchers coded to Iran; the documents did not show whether the systems were delivered[52].
Houthis, Saudi Alerts and Yemen’s Dawn Offensive
The Saudi-led coalition said Thursday that air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile headed toward the Medina region; spokesman Turki al-Maliki announced the intercept on X without naming a specific target or reporting damage[53][54]. No Houthi reply to that intercept appeared in the opened wires. Saudi Civil Defense separately issued brief potential-danger alerts in Yanbu and two in Sharurah in Najran province, then said the danger had passed, without describing the threat[55].
Yemen’s army said Wednesday it had carried out 1,322 operations, claiming about 340 Houthi fighters and commanders killed or incapacitated and 114 vehicles or pieces of equipment destroyed or damaged, with gains in Al-Jawf and Taiz under the Dawn of Yemen offensive that began October 5[56]. On Thursday, army-affiliated September Net said government forces repelled a Houthi attack on Taiz city’s northern front; Al-Jumhuriya TV reported an airstrike on a Houthi missile launcher on Mount Ba’dan in Ibb and further strikes southeast of Mount Saber in Taiz; Aden TV reported clashes and strikes on the Lahj front[57]. Houthi comments on those specific reports were not carried in the sources checked.
Israel: Herzog Consults as Netanyahu’s Bloc Frays
Herzog accepted the certified election results and opened consultations on who should form the next government, saying: “The elections are over. Now is the time to face reality”[58][59]. Netanyahu’s coalition holds 53 seats and Eisenkot’s aligned opposition 48, with Arab-led lists holding the balance toward 61[60][61].
United Torah Judaism, which holds seven seats and had been counted with Netanyahu’s bloc, told Herzog it would not recommend either candidate while keeping the door open to whoever meets its demands on Haredi Torah study and military service[62]. Ra’am, with eight seats, recommended Eisenkot, bringing his formal recommendations to 56 against an expected 46 for Netanyahu if UTJ stays out[63]. Likud and Otzma Yehudit still backed Netanyahu; several opposition parties backed Eisenkot[64].
Syria and Saudi Arabia Sign a Defense Pact
During President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s visit to Riyadh, Syria and Saudi Arabia signed a defense cooperation agreement and six concessional loan deals worth more than $403 million for electricity, water, health, emergency services, housing and digital finance, Syrian and Saudi outlets reported[65][66]. Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said the defense pact was signed with Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman; detailed terms were not published[67].
Domestic Affairs
No new nationwide internet blackout or major street protest inside Iran was documented in the sources opened for this window; earlier outage and student-sit-in reporting is in yesterday’s update. In Israel, the consultation process itself was the main domestic political event, with UTJ’s refusal to recommend Netanyahu the clearest shift from the prior day[68][69].
War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.
Local sources and the Jerusalem Governorate said Israeli forces demolished seven Palestinian homes across the West Bank on Thursday — including five in Biddu northwest of Jerusalem — displacing more than 20 people, citing lack of permits[70]. Palestinian, Israeli and international rights groups say such permits are rarely granted to Palestinians while settlement building continues; these are allegations by the named parties, and no court ruling is cited here[71].
In Yemen, field and television reports cited civilian harm around Taiz and other fronts amid airstrikes and shelling; specific independent casualty totals for Thursday were not established in the sources checked[72].

What to Watch (Assessment)
- Any owner, insurer or flag-state confirmation of the Hormuz fire and Qatar projectile incidents.
- Whether Trump orders new strikes or follows Vance toward a mediated deal.
- Further Operation Economic Outcast designations and industry response to the false-flag alert.
- Herzog’s mandate decision after Ra’am and UTJ positions.
- Additional Houthi launches into Saudi Arabia and the pace of Dawn of Yemen in Taiz and Al-Jawf.
Related War Room Reports
Geography & Strategic Position
New fire claims and a UK-verified projectile strike off Qatar keep the contest centered on the Strait of Hormuz and the approaches north of the Persian Gulf, while a Saudi interception over the Medina region and Civil Defense alerts in Yanbu and Sharurah show the Yemen front still reaches deep into the kingdom[1][2][3][4].
Military & Security
No new US or Iranian strike package was confirmed by war.gov in the window. The Guards and Iran’s navy issued fresh mine and fire claims at sea, the Guards said electronic-warfare units took control of two Lucas-type aircraft, and Saudi-led air defenses said they destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile headed toward Medina[5][6][7][8].
Alliances & Diplomatic Networks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Oman’s Badr Albusaidi spoke by phone about practical steps to protect shipping and end the state of war, as Qatar’s mediation channel remained open and South Korea moved to push its Cheonghae anti-piracy unit closer to Hormuz[9][10]. Syria’s president and Saudi Arabia’s crown prince oversaw a defense cooperation deal and more than $403 million in Saudi loans[11].
Economic & Industrial Power
Treasury’s Operation Economic Outcast designated an India-based false-flag network and a Türkiye ground-handling firm that services sanctioned Iranian airlines, aiming to cut oil and aviation revenue that funds Tehran’s war effort[12]. Vance and Trump both tied higher fuel costs from the war to the midterm defeat[13].
Technology & Critical Infrastructure
A war.gov story said Central Command forces have received more than 25,000 unmanned aerial systems and counter-drone kits this year under Project Agincourt. The Office of Naval Research posted no new release in the window; the Naval Research Laboratory site was not reopened after prior blocks[14][15].
Domestic Politics & Information
Vance wrote that the reason Republicans lost is the war, and Trump said that assessment was largely true while still defending the campaign. In Israel, President Isaac Herzog opened formal consultations as United Torah Judaism declined to recommend Benjamin Netanyahu and Ra’am backed Gadi Eisenkot[16][17][18][19].
Strategic Leverage & Outcomes
Washington still holds the naval blockade and the choice of whether to strike again; Tehran still treats Hormuz as a lever it can close with mines and fires, as restated in the latest Guards and navy claims[20][21]. The midterm result has hardened a public fight inside the Republican camp over whether the war was worth the political cost, without ending either the blockade or Iran’s maritime claims[22].
Strategic assessment
- Relative advantage
- The United States keeps the blockade, Centcom drone stocks and the sanctions lever.
- Critical vulnerability
- Commercial shipping near Hormuz and off Qatar remains exposed to mines, projectiles and unverified Iranian claims.
- Decisive uncertainty
- Whether Vance’s push for a deal outweighs any renewed strike option after the midterms.
- Likely trajectory
- More maritime incidents, more mediation calls and more Economic Outcast designations before any announced deal.
- Strategic outcome
- Not yet determinable.
