This Africa security update for November 6, 2026, covers a rebel attack that killed at least 24 civilians in eastern DR Congo, a rising Orthodox Christian death toll in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, and Sudanese army claims of regained ground in North Kordofan.[1][2][3] It follows yesterday’s Africa update; see the War Room.

DR Congo: Beni Attack Kills 24

Jean Katuho, a civil-society leader in Beni, said rebels launched simultaneous attacks on several villages overnight Thursday into Friday and that the provisional toll was 24 civilians killed, with houses and businesses burned as attackers fled toward the forest.[14] Local media said residents fled to nearby localities. Ugandan and Congolese forces have conducted joint operations against Allied Democratic Forces rebels since 2021; attribution for this specific raid was given by local civil society as rebels.[15]

Ethiopia: Orthodox Death Toll Climbs to 94

Anadolu reported that gunmen killed 34 more Orthodox Christians in Endato village, Robe district, raising a toll tied to October attacks in Merti and Shirka districts to 94 according to church-linked tallies.[16] The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission attributed earlier October attacks to the Oromo Liberation Army; authorities said nearly 70 suspects were arrested after those killings.[17] These are attributed figures; independent court findings are not cited here.

Sudan: Army Claims in North Kordofan

Military sources told Anadolu that Sudanese army forces recaptured Kazgeil and Abu Qaoud in North Kordofan after fighting with the Rapid Support Forces.[18] Those are army claims and were not independently verified in the opened sources.

Domestic Affairs

Nigeria’s military ruled out a truce with Boko Haram and vowed intensified counterterrorism operations, according to Anadolu’s Thursday relay.[19]

  • Independent confirmation of North Kordofan territorial claims.

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

Violence concentrated in North Kivu’s Beni territory, Oromia’s Robe district, and Sudan’s North Kordofan, three theaters already under long-running armed-group pressure.[4][5][6]

Military & Security

war.gov carried no Africa strike release in the window; AFRICOM HTML was not reopened after prior blocks.[7] Congolese civil-society accounts attributed the Beni killings to rebels; Ethiopian rights bodies have blamed the Oromo Liberation Army for earlier October massacres; Sudanese military sources claimed recapture of Kazgeil and Abu Qaoud from the Rapid Support Forces.[8][9][10]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

MONUSCO chief James Swan met North Kivu leaders on civilian protection the day before the Beni attack reporting, stressing patrols and rapid reaction.[11] Sudan-Ethiopia consular expulsions from earlier in the week remain unresolved background (see Nov 5).

Economic & Industrial Power

No new Africa trade-sanctions package dominated this window after yesterday’s AGOA coverage; secondary effects are tracked in Trade War when relevant.[7]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

Not a primary driver in today’s sourced items.[7]

Domestic Politics & Information

Nigeria’s military publicly ruled out a truce with Boko Haram, and opposition politics around 2027 continued; those items are secondary to the Congo and Ethiopia civilian tolls for this edition.[12]

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Armed groups still dictate overnight civilian risk in eastern Congo and Oromia while Sudanese front lines shift claim-by-claim without a verified nationwide ceasefire.[13]

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
State forces hold cities and air power; groups hold night raid initiative.
Critical vulnerability
Remote villages in Beni and Oromia.
Decisive uncertainty
Whether MONUSCO and Ethiopian operations can stop follow-on massacres.
Likely trajectory
More attributed civilian toll updates.
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable.
