China Taiwan News Oct 30, 2026: Kim’s Drone Push, Shoal Drills
China Taiwan news: Kim Jong Un demands drone superiority at a weapons demo, and China’s coast guard drills near Philippine-claimed shoals.
Key Takeaways: 5 things to know
- North Korea said it fired 600-millimeter rockets, cruise missiles and attack drones at a demonstration where Kim Jong Un demanded “absolute superiority” in drones (see Korean Peninsula).
- South Korean, US and Japanese diplomats held phone talks on the launches, and their foreign ministers are due to meet in Atlanta on October 30 (see Korean Peninsula).
- China’s coast guard practiced water cannon and drone operations near Second Thomas and Sabina shoals, which the Philippines also claims, state television said (see Philippines and South China Sea).
- Chinese state media said a GJ-21 stealth drone took off and landed on the amphibious assault ship Sichuan for the first time (see China’s Military).
- Taiwan’s Defense Ministry tracked six Chinese military aircraft and seven navy ships around the island, and three aircraft crossed the median line (see Taiwan).

These two rows describe the same October 29 event from two sides. South Korea’s military put the launch at about 10 short-range ballistic missiles that flew about 250 kilometers, the low end of the 10-to-12 range in yesterday’s report; North Korea described the weapons differently and gave no number.[4] NK News said the United States, South Korea and Japan had given widely different estimates of the number of projectiles.[5]
This China and Taiwan news update for October 30, 2026 covers North Korea’s weapons demonstration for leader Kim Jong Un, new Chinese coast guard drills near disputed shoals claimed by the Philippines, the first landing of a stealth drone on a Chinese amphibious assault ship and a US ban on Chinese testing labs.[1] It follows the Oct 29 Indo-Pacific update.
Korean Peninsula
North Korea’s state media said Kim attended an exhibition of unmanned aircraft on October 29, followed by a live-fire demonstration of suicide attack drones, tactical cruise missiles and a battalion of 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers known as “Sniper.”[6] Kim called for “absolute superiority” in unmanned attack capabilities, the Korean Central News Agency said.[7] A wire report said the display reflects Pyongyang’s push to use drones and artificial intelligence as it draws lessons from its troops’ role in Russia’s war against Ukraine.[8]
Senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States and Japan discussed the launches by phone on October 30, Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said.[9] Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is set to meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Atlanta, followed by the signing of a trilateral Arctic-Pacific Partnership memorandum.[10] Secretary of State Marco Rubio is chairing a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta on October 30 and 31, with freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, the Black Sea and the South China Sea at the top of the US agenda.[11]
North Korea’s defense ministry denounced the US-South Korean Freedom Flag air exercise, which began on October 26, and vowed to “thoroughly deter threats with force.”[12] South Korea’s new KF-21 fighter flew in formation with US Air Force F-35, F-16 and U-2S aircraft for the first time before the drills began.[13] Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis arrived in Pyongyang as Switzerland reopened its diplomatic office there.[14]
Analysts blamed North Korea for the theft of $6.3 billion from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange, a record heist; Binance said it would cover the losses.[15]
Allies and Partners
Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul said Secretary of War Pete Hegseth dismissed reports of friction in the alliance as “fake news” during their talks in Cebu.[16] South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers the United States restricted some intelligence sharing this year after a South Korean minister disclosed details of a suspected North Korean nuclear site, though it said the restrictions covered only a very limited portion of intelligence.[17]
National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said Seoul will keep taking necessary measures over a September land mine blast in the Demilitarized Zone that wounded three South Korean soldiers.[18] He also said South Korea will not get involved in the war with Iran but could contribute in the Strait of Hormuz if necessary.[19] Today’s Middle East report covers the Hormuz shipping crisis. Wi said Seoul will continue to support Ukraine despite a recent diplomatic row.[20]
Japan and the United States plan more realistic joint drills, including more live-fire training, after Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met Hegseth this week.[21] At the ASEAN defense ministers’ meeting in Cebu, Koizumi pledged to keep Japan’s “exclusively defense-oriented” policy as Tokyo revises its three main security documents by year-end.[22]
Philippines and South China Sea
China’s coast guard recently trained near Second Thomas Shoal and Sabina Shoal for foreign vessels “illegally” entering the area, including water cannon use, drone operations and small-boat maneuvers, state broadcaster CCTV said without giving dates.[23] Both shoals are at the center of China’s dispute with the Philippines.[24] Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese plans to visit Beijing after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit hosted by China.[25]
China’s Military
China’s first shipborne stealth reconnaissance-strike drone, the GJ-21, completed its first takeoff and landing on the amphibious assault ship Sichuan, Xinhua said.[26] A four-day Communist Party meeting confirmed the expulsion of 33 Central Committee members, including 16 senior generals, as the anti-corruption campaign in the armed forces widens.[27]
Taiwan
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it detected six sorties by Chinese military aircraft, seven navy ships and one official ship around Taiwan as of 6 a.m. Taipei time on October 30.[28] Three of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait into Taiwan’s northern, eastern and southwestern air defense identification zone, and Taiwan responded with combat air patrol aircraft, navy ships and coastal missile systems.[29]
Domestic Affairs
The US Federal Communications Commission banned Chinese laboratories from testing electronic devices bound for the US market, weeks before President Donald Trump is due to meet Xi Jinping at the summit in Shenzhen.[30] China’s Foreign Ministry said the United States is “overstretching the concept of national security” and that China “firmly opposes and deplores” the move.[31] Today’s Trade War report covers the lab ban.
War Crimes and Civilian Harm
Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.
No new war crimes or civilian harm in this theater were reported in the window. The September mine blast in the Demilitarized Zone wounded three South Korean soldiers, two of them seriously, Wi said.[32]

What to Watch (Assessment)
- What the South Korean, US and Japanese foreign ministers agree in Atlanta on North Korea.
- Whether North Korea follows its demonstration with longer-range launches during the Freedom Flag drills.
- Any Chinese coast guard moves at Second Thomas or Sabina shoals after the drills.
- Further US technology restrictions, or Chinese responses, before the Trump-Xi meeting.
Related War Room Reports
Geography & Strategic Position
Second Thomas and Sabina shoals are claimed by both China and the Philippines, so Chinese drills there test Manila directly.[37] North Korea’s launches from the east coast keep both Seoul and Tokyo within range of the same salvos.[38]
Military & Security
North Korea is pairing missiles with mass drones, a mix that could strain air defenses built for ballistic threats.[39] China’s carrier-style drone landing points to longer-range naval reach for its amphibious fleet.[40]
Alliances & Diplomatic Networks
The trilateral meeting in Atlanta gives Washington, Seoul and Tokyo a quick chance to coordinate after the launches.[41] The intelligence-sharing limits show strain inside the US-South Korean alliance even as both defense ministers deny a rift.[42]
Economic & Industrial Power
The FCC lab ban moves technology competition into testing and certification, an area that touches many consumer products.[43] If the analysts are right, the Binance theft would give Pyongyang a large source of hard currency outside sanctions.[44]
Technology & Critical Infrastructure
Kim’s call for drone superiority and China’s GJ-21 landing show both states putting unmanned systems at the center of their forces.[45] South Korea’s KF-21 flying with US jets moves Seoul’s own fighter closer to allied operations.[46]
Strategic assessment
- Relative advantage
- The United States and its allies, which kept coordination meetings on track after North Korea’s demonstration.
- Critical vulnerability
- Allied air defenses facing mixed salvos of missiles, rockets and drones.
- Decisive uncertainty
- Whether the Trump-Xi meeting eases pressure in the South China Sea.
- Likely trajectory
- Continued North Korean tests during allied drills and steady Chinese pressure on Philippine-claimed shoals.
- Strategic outcome
- Not yet determinable.
