TAIPEI — China might be conducting a major, unannounced military exercise simulating the isolation of Taiwan that is larger than the PLA’s Justice Mission 2025, the American Enterprise Institute and the Institute for the Study of War said in a joint report, the Taipei Times reported.

What the report says

Forces from the eastern, northern and southern theater commands may be involved, possibly to coordinate surface combatants from all three coastal commands in one far-seas operation.

The report cited Taiwan National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu, who said more than 100 PLA Navy and China Coast Guard vessels were operating in the western Pacific. The exercise is described as possible, not confirmed.

What to watch

Assessment: Confirmation would come from Taiwanese or allied defense officials, or from a PLA announcement.
