MOSCOW — A military satellite launched on a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from the Plesetsk spaceport reached its target orbit on Saturday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said, TASS, a Russian state agency, reported.

What the ministry said

The ministry said the launch and orbital insertion proceeded normally and that the satellite was placed under the control of Aerospace Forces ground facilities. The statement carried by TASS did not describe the satellite’s mission.

What to watch

Assessment: Public orbital tracking data may offer the first clues about the satellite’s purpose.
