Hacker groups Belarusian Cyberpartisans and Silent Crow, which claimed a cyberattack on Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), said on Nov. 7, 2026, that leaked death records indicate 394,000 to 450,000 people fighting on Russia’s side or linked to the war have died since February 2022, the Kyiv Independent reported. The outlet said it could not immediately verify the records or the estimates.
How the groups got to those numbers
The groups said the records came from Rosstat’s internal Demography database, covering death certificates registered from February 2022 through August 2026. Belarusian Cyberpartisans estimated at least 393,881 deaths based on records naming military operations as the cause.
Silent Crow published a higher estimate of up to 450,100, using a broader method that included non-combat deaths of military personnel and some deaths with no stated cause, the report said.
The hack claim
The hackers said they had access to Rosstat’s network for about six months before the attack, collecting internal documents, the report said.
What it means
Analysis: This is a hacker claim, not a confirmed count. Independent review of the leaked data, or comparison with obituary-based tallies, is what would make the figures usable.
