Iran War Update Oct 29, 2026: Vance Letter, Hormuz Mines, Aden Hit
Iran war update: Vance writes to Tehran as allies brace for strikes, the Guards claim Hormuz mine hits, and Houthi missiles strike Aden’s airport.
Key Takeaways: 5 things to know
- Vice President Vance wrote to Iran’s security chief about restarting talks, and President Trump said he approved the outreach, citing medical supplies (see Vance Letter Opens a Channel as Allies Brace).
- Two diplomats said American officials told Middle East allies to brace for possible strikes on Iran after the November 3 midterms, and for retaliation (see Vance Letter Opens a Channel as Allies Brace).
- Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said three oil tankers hit mines near Hormuz within a day, while Britain’s maritime trade office reported a ship ablaze off Oman (see Hormuz: Mines, a Burning Ship and Drone Claims).
- Two Houthi ballistic missiles struck Aden’s international airport on October 28, Yemen’s army said, and Saudi defenses stopped another missile aimed at the Eastern Province (see Houthi Fire Reaches Aden and the Eastern Province).
- With every regular ballot counted, Israeli television projected 53 seats for Netanyahu’s bloc and 48 for Eisenkot’s, leaving both short of a 61-seat majority (see Israel’s Count Nears Its End Without a Majority).

Official counts and claims, October 28, ~7:30 AM ET, to October 29, ~7:30 AM ET.
All Iranian and Houthi figures are their own claims. Israel and Central Command released no strike counts in this window.
In this October 29 Iran war news update, Washington paired a quiet letter to Tehran with louder warnings to its allies, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed new mine strikes on tankers near Hormuz, Houthi missiles hit Aden’s airport, and Israel’s count neared its end with no majority (see yesterday’s Iran war update and the War Room).[1]
Vance Letter Opens a Channel as Allies Brace
Washington opened a quiet line to Tehran even as it warned its friends to prepare for war. Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, seeking to restart negotiations, a US newspaper reported, and a US official told a news site the letter said any talks to prevent new strikes would have to cover Iran’s nuclear program.[17] Trump confirmed he approved the contact but denied directing Vance to restart peace talks. “They need help with medical supplies and various things. He asked me what I thought. I said, ‘if you want to do that, that’s OK,'” he told reporters.[18] The letter and later contacts focused on a framework for negotiations rather than a detailed proposal, according to the newspaper.[19]
The warnings came through the same week. US officials told several Middle East countries to be ready for renewed military action after the November 3 elections, and for Iranian retaliation against energy sites and other infrastructure, according to two diplomats briefed on the matter.[20] They said the new round could last several days, stressed that Trump has not made a final decision, and noted that the United States has not struck Iran since early September. The United Arab Emirates urged both sides to “exercise wisdom and pursue political solutions.”
Tehran answered with its own two-track message. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote that “Iran continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed” and that Tehran is reviewing ideas with mediators to carry out its seven-day plan “in even less than a week.”[21] That plan, sent through Qatar in September, asks the United States to end hostilities, lift the naval blockade and release frozen assets before Iran reopens the strait on day six. Rezaei, for his part, warned that Iran could hit US-related data centers and other artificial intelligence targets if attacked.[22]
Hormuz: Mines, a Burning Ship and Drone Claims
The strait produced the most incidents of the day. Britain’s maritime trade office said the master of a passing ship reported another vessel on fire 9 nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman, with the crew’s status unknown and no damage assessment available.[23] Iranian state media said the strait will stay closed until the United States accepts the seven-day plan.[24]
The Revolutionary Guards Navy said three oil tankers struck mines and caught fire over 24 hours after taking an “unauthorized” southern route out of the strait, and that they had “switched off their radar and navigation systems.”[25] It also said its electronic warfare unit forced a US MQM-170 decoy drone to land intact in the western strait. Separately, the Guards said they shot down an MQ-1 drone off Sirik, their 14th of the type, without naming its operator.[26] None of these claims had independent confirmation by the cutoff, and it is not known whether the burning ship off Khasab is one of the three tankers. This updates yesterday’s report, in which Iran’s army described a single tanker hitting mines.
Houthi Fire Reaches Aden and the Eastern Province
The Houthis followed through on their warning to Aden. A day after they told people to leave Aden International Airport, a missile landed at the adjacent Al-Nasr Camp, home to coast guard forces and the Interior Ministry, witnesses said, and Yemen’s army said two Houthi ballistic missiles struck the airport, wounding civilians.[27] Army spokesman Majed al-Nuzaili gave no casualty figure. Flights at the airport have since resumed, and fighting restarted on several fronts south of Taiz.[28]
Saudi Arabia faced fire again. Air defenses intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at the Eastern Province early on October 29 local time, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said, reporting no casualties or damage.[29] Civil Defense later issued and lifted a separate warning in Najran.[30] On the other side, Houthi broadcaster Al-Masirah said a Saudi strike on a petrol station in Hazm, in Jawf province, killed 12 people and wounded 10; Saudi Arabia had not commented.[31]
Israel’s Count Nears Its End Without a Majority
Israel’s election is close to a final tally with no winner. After all regular ballots were counted, Channel 12 projected 53 seats for Netanyahu’s bloc, 48 for the Eisenkot-led bloc and a record 19 for Arab parties, with turnout of 77.7 percent, the highest since 1999.[32] This updates yesterday’s partial count of 54, 49 and 17 at about 84 percent. The elections committee estimated 430,000 to 480,000 double-envelope ballots from soldiers, diplomats and displaced voters, with final results expected on the evening of October 29.[33] About 6 percent of them had been counted by early October 29.[34]
The coalition fight has already begun. President Isaac Herzog said Israel must “do everything we can” to avoid another election.[35] Herzog’s office denied a television report of a power-sharing plan that would hand Eisenkot the premiership after two years.[36] Netanyahu’s allies pressed Arab parties over unproven foreign-funding claims, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called for the arrest of Arab party leaders.[37] The head of the elections panel asked the Shin Bet security service to investigate allegations of Qatari influence, and a US official said the White House has not decided whether to intervene in coalition talks.[38][39] Iranian officials quoted by a British newspaper said Tehran tried to interfere in Israel’s vote; today’s Information War report covers that claim.[40]
Lebanon and Syria
Southern Lebanon saw strikes but no major escalation. Israeli warplanes hit Kfar Tebnit twice and struck near Barashit and Wadi al-Hujayr, two explosive-laden drones detonated over Mansouri, and Israel’s army said it fired an interceptor at a suspected aerial target near its troops.[41] Artillery fire continued on October 29 between Mayfadoun and Zawtar al-Sharqiyeh.[42]
Politics in Beirut turned on the risk of a wider war. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said the group does not care who governs Israel and that “there is no room to discuss the disarmament” while the occupation lasts.[43] An official source said Hezbollah has given no formal guarantee to stay out of a new war for Iran.[44] President Joseph Aoun said Lebanon’s demands for a ceasefire, withdrawal, border demarcation and the return of prisoners have not been met.[45] Speaker Nabih Berri warned against ending the UN peacekeeping mission before Israel fully withdraws.[46] In Syria, gunmen killed two Defense Ministry personnel in Al-Foua, Idlib province, state media said.[47]
Domestic Affairs
No killings of Revolutionary Guards, Basij, Quds Force or regular army personnel were reported in the sources checked for this window. The economy remains the main domestic pressure point: monthly inflation was 4.4 percent and the 12-month average reached 76.8 percent, the Statistical Center of Iran said.[48]
The crackdown continued in parallel. UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato told the General Assembly that Iran has executed at least 34 people in connection with the January protests and held mass trials ending in death sentences.[49] A Tehran court sentenced film director Jafar Panahi to five years and one month in prison and ordered his assets confiscated, his lawyer said.[50] Abroad, Kuwait summoned Iran’s ambassador over what it called interference in its internal affairs, and Iran’s embassy rejected the allegations as baseless.[51][52]
War Crimes and Civilian Harm
Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.
In Gaza, an Israeli strike on an Economy Ministry post in al-Mawasi, west of Rafah, killed four government employees and wounded 30, six critically, the Hamas-run government media office said, calling it “a horrific massacre.”[53] That updates an earlier local count of three killed.[54] Medical sources put deaths since the ceasefire at 1,568.[55] Israel had not commented in the sources checked.
In the West Bank, Israel’s operation in Hebron entered its seventh day, and the Hebron Municipality said it has displaced nearly 5,000 Palestinians from 780 families.[56] That is above the earlier UN estimate of over 2,000, so estimates now range from over 2,000 to nearly 5,000 depending on the source. In Yemen, the government said fighting in Taiz province from August 10 to October 15 displaced 135,587 people and killed 79 civilians, figures the Houthis have not addressed.[57] These are allegations and counts from parties to the conflicts; no competent body has made findings on these incidents.

What to Watch (Assessment)
- Whether Tehran answers the Vance letter, and whether talks on a framework begin before November 3.
- Identification of the ship burning off Khasab and any independent check of the mine claims.
- Further Houthi fire at Aden and Saudi Arabia, and Saudi strikes in Yemen.
- The final Israeli count and Herzog’s choice of who forms the next government.
Related War Room Reports
Geography & Strategic Position
The Strait of Hormuz is again the center of the fighting at sea, with mine claims on its southern route and a burning ship 9 nautical miles north of Oman’s Khasab.[2] Houthi fire now spans Yemen’s government seat at Aden and Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich Eastern Province, so both ends of the Arabian Peninsula sit inside the threat area.
Military & Security
The Revolutionary Guards claimed a drone kill, a captured decoy drone and three mined tankers in 24 hours, none independently confirmed (see Munitions Count). Saudi air defenses reported one more interception, and Central Command released no strike statement in this window.[3]
Alliances & Diplomatic Networks
US warnings that allies should brace for Iranian retaliation put Gulf states in the line of fire, and the United Arab Emirates publicly urged both sides to “exercise wisdom.”[4] Russia went the other way on Iran’s nuclear power plant, with Rosatom planning to raise staff at Bushehr to 700 people.[5]
Economic & Industrial Power
Iran’s statistics agency put year-on-year inflation at 88.7 percent in the month to October 22, down slightly from 89.8 percent.[6] We assess that prices this high limit how long Tehran can absorb the US naval blockade without a deal, though no official has said so.
Technology & Critical Infrastructure
Rezaei warned that Iran could strike US-related infrastructure, including data centers and other artificial intelligence targets, if attacked again.[7] If accurate, the Guards’ claim to have forced down a US decoy drone by electronic warfare would show jamming as part of Iran’s Hormuz defense.
Domestic Politics & Information
Israel’s near-final count leaves Netanyahu needing partners he has ruled out, while his allies press Arab parties over unproven foreign-funding claims (see Israel’s Count Nears Its End Without a Majority).[8] In Iran, a UN rapporteur’s account of executions tied to the January protests shows the crackdown continuing alongside the war (see Domestic Affairs).
Strategic Leverage & Outcomes
Washington is pressing on two tracks at once, offering a channel through Vance while preparing allies for strikes, and Trump has not decided, according to diplomats.[9] Tehran’s leverage remains the strait, which it says stays closed until the United States accepts its seven-day plan.[10]
Strategic assessment
- Relative advantage
- The United States holds the initiative on timing, with strikes and talks both on the table after November 3.
- Critical vulnerability
- Gulf energy sites and shipping remain exposed to Iranian and Houthi retaliation.
- Decisive uncertainty
- Whether the Vance letter turns into talks before a US decision on strikes.
- Likely trajectory
- More Hormuz incidents and Houthi fire through the US midterms.
- Strategic outcome
- Not yet determinable; both diplomacy and escalation remain live.
