This information war update finds X suspending more than 13,000 accounts it ties to Iranian, Russian and Chinese influence networks, AI-made videos exploiting the Houthi strikes on Saudi airports, and Brazil’s electoral court ordering Meta to treat both runoff candidates equally (see yesterday’s information war update and the War Room).[1]

X Purges 13,000 Accounts Tied to Iran, Russia and China

X said on the evening of October 14 that it had suspended more than 13,000 accounts in three suspected foreign influence operations linked to Iran, Russia and China.[24] The networks used inauthentic accounts to post and amplify content about US politics, targeting candidates and public figures across the spectrum, the company said.[25] X said the accounts were found through proactive sweeps as it outlined safeguards ahead of the midterms.[26] The company did not say how many accounts were linked to each country.[27] It also did not publicly explain the evidence behind its attribution.[28] The announcement was not covered in the October 15 edition, which closed before most reporting appeared.[29]

AI Fakes Exploit the Houthi Strikes on Saudi Airports

A 14-second clip of panic at an airport, shared on Weibo as a Houthi strike on Dammam, is AI-generated and had been debunked once before in March.[30] The clip drew more than 109,000 views and was flagged by Meta’s AI detection tool as synthetic.[31] A second video, shared with an Indonesian-language caption, claimed to show a Saudia jet exploding at Riyadh’s King Khalid airport.[32] Fact-checkers found visual errors typical of synthetic content, and a detection tool flagged it as generative AI.[33] Both fakes rode on a real event, the October 10 Houthi strike on Riyadh’s airport that killed at least 13 people.[34] Today’s Middle East war update covers the real Saudi-Houthi exchanges.[35]

Satire and Recycled Clips Drive US Political Fakes

A claim that President Trump accused Ukraine of midterm interference after strikes on Russian “bot farms” came from an Australian satire site.[36] The story first ran on October 14, and no statement by Trump matched it.[37] It claimed the strikes caused a sharp drop in social media activity worldwide, a detail repeated by accounts that shared it as news.[38] The site, launched in 2014, presents itself as the local paper of a Queensland ghost town.[39] A viral clip said to show new White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia fumbling a pageant question actually shows Lauren Caitlin Upton at the 2007 Miss Teen USA contest.[40] The clip spread after Zacharia’s first briefing on October 13, which she ended after 15 minutes and three questions.[41] Neither fake required foreign state involvement, a reminder that domestic recycling is still the largest source of false political content.[42]

Hormuz Footage and Iran’s Hebrew Personas

A viral video of ships crowded on the water, shared as vessels stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, was matched by topography to the area around Chittagong, Bangladesh.[43] The 54-second clip was filmed from a low-flying passenger plane near an airport, fact-checkers found.[44] Other fact-checkers had already examined separate videos making the same Hormuz claim.[45] Separately, an Israeli OSINT firm reported on October 12 a network of at least 694 accounts posing as Israelis on X before the Knesset vote.[46] It attributed 445 of them with high or medium-high confidence to an Iranian regime-operated apparatus.[47] Posts from 181 of the accounts drew at least 4.7 million views between August 11 and October 11, the firm said.[48]

Brazil’s Court Orders Meta to Treat Lula and Bolsonaro Equally

Brazil’s top electoral court ruled on October 15 that Meta must immediately secure equal treatment of the two presidential candidates.[49] Justice Marco Aurélio Bellizze barred Meta from reducing distribution of political content, restricting searches or removing posts in ways that tilt the race.[50] He ordered Meta’s AI tool to apply identical criteria to both campaigns.[51] Lula’s filing said Meta had subjected his campaign’s posts to “unjustified reductions in reach.”[52] Lula’s campaign said users could not generate campaign images of the president with WhatsApp’s Meta AI but could for Flávio Bolsonaro.[53] The campaign also said Bolsonaro-linked accounts received artificially inflated visibility.[54] It added that Meta had not complied with a plan it had submitted to the electoral court to fix the problems.[55]

Russia Targets Moldova From the OSCE Podium

Russia’s OSCE envoy, Dmitri Poleanski, claimed Moldova would help Ukraine’s army by supplying drone routes, assembly sites and medical centers.[56] The envoy presented the claims as facts.[57] Moldova’s foreign ministry called the claims false and without evidence.[58] The same fact-checkers found that some of the envoy’s statements had been deliberately manipulated.[59] A Moldovan fact-checking project found nearly identical narratives pushed on social networks, including through paid posts.[60] Overnight into October 16, Russian drones crossed into Moldovan airspace five times without crashes, the kind of incident such narratives seek to reframe.[61] The incursions were recorded in northern and south-eastern Moldova during large Russian attacks on Ukraine.[62] No new compatriot-protection claim by Moscow was found in the window.[63]

Domestic Affairs

In the United States, the Zacharia clip spread as critics mocked her short first briefing, showing how personal attacks recycle old footage.[70] X tied its account purge to midterm safeguards, keeping platform integrity in the US campaign debate.[71] In Brazil, the Meta ruling lands 10 days before the runoff, with a daily fine of 500,000 reais, about $98,000, for non-compliance.[72] In Colombia, community groups said the Pasto flag rumor stigmatized volunteers feeding marchers.[73] In Israel, the Hebrew persona network targets voters in the final weeks of the campaign.[74] In Ukraine, Zelensky’s complaint about Starlink speed limits kept dependence on a US-owned network in public debate.[75] In Moldova, the government’s rebuttal of the OSCE claims kept Russian narratives in the domestic news cycle.[76]

What to Watch (Assessment)

  • Whether X releases evidence or a country breakdown for its purge.[80]
  • Meta’s compliance with Brazil’s court order before October 25.[81]
  • New AI clips tied to Saudi airport strikes.[82]
  • Activity by the Hebrew persona network before Israel’s October 27 vote.[83]
  • Further Russian claims about Moldova at international forums.[84]

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

This window’s fights centered on three election calendars: the US midterms on November 3, Israel’s vote on October 27 and Brazil’s runoff on October 25 (see X Purges 13,000 Accounts and Brazil’s Court Orders Meta).[2] The Middle East war supplied the raw material, with fake strike videos and mislabeled Hormuz footage.[3]

Military & Security

The US Navy said it landed a drone on a ship without GPS, preparing for adversaries who jam satellite navigation first (see Statements).[4] Zelensky said reduced Starlink speeds stopped Ukrainian interceptors from catching jet-powered Shaheds, showing how control of a commercial network shapes air defense.[5]

Score 3/5Evidence confidence: MediumTrend: Deteriorating

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Russia’s envoy used the OSCE podium to claim Moldova helps Ukraine’s drone war, which Chisinau rejected as false, a pattern of diplomatic platforms laundering narratives (see Russia Targets Moldova).[6] X named Iran, Russia and China together, but gave no per-country breakdown, which limits any coordinated government response.[7]

Economic & Industrial Power

Platforms now carry regulatory and legal risk for moderation choices, as Brazil’s court set a daily fine of 500,000 reais for any imbalance in Meta’s treatment of candidates.[8] X framed its purge as part of midterm safeguards, a commercial signal to advertisers and regulators.[9]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

Generative video is now the default tool for war fakes, with two AI clips of Houthi airport strikes flagged by detection tools within days.[10] Topographic matching exposed a viral “Hormuz” ship video as footage from Chittagong, Bangladesh.[11]

Domestic Politics & Information

US political fakes in the window came from recycled clips and satire rather than from states, including a 2007 pageant video passed off as the new White House press secretary (see Satire and Recycled Clips).[12] In Colombia, viral claims of ELN flags at an anti-government march were rejected by organizers.[13]

Score 3/5Evidence confidence: MediumTrend: Unclear

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Platforms hold the decisive lever, because only they can see account metadata, yet X released no public evidence for its attribution.[14] Fact-checkers can expose individual fakes quickly, but the Houthi clip had already drawn more than 109,000 views on one platform.[15]

Strategic assessment

– Who holds the initiative: State-linked networks and anonymous AI-video posters, who move faster than takedowns.[16]

– Most dangerous course: A coordinated fake tied to a real strike in the last days before an election.[17]

– Most likely course: More AI war footage around Gulf strikes and more platform-court clashes in Brazil.[18]

– Indicator to watch: Whether X publishes data behind its attribution.[19]
