Middle East war update: a Riyadh airport strike kills 12, Trump weighs hitting the Houthis, and US jets disable a blockade runner.
Key Takeaways6 things to know
- A strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on October 10 killed 12 people, including an American, and injured more than 300, Saudi authorities said, the deadliest such attack in the kingdom in more than a decade (see Saudi Arabia and Yemen).[19]
- President Donald Trump raised the possibility of joining Saudi strikes on the Houthis and of resuming attacks on Iran, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Houthi attacks “must stop now” (see Washington and the Wider Coalition).[20]
- A US fighter jet disabled the Panama-flagged cargo ship Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman on October 10, the fourth commercial vessel disabled since the blockade resumed on July 14, CENTCOM said (see The Strait of Hormuz and the Blockade).[21]
- The IRGC Navy claimed a supertanker hit a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, while British maritime authorities reported a tanker set ablaze by a projectile; whether they are the same ship is unconfirmed (see The Strait of Hormuz and the Blockade).[22]
- Yemen’s government warned on October 10 that medicines and fuel at hospitals in besieged Taiz were nearing depletion, as Houthi forces tightened a siege that cut the city’s last main road on October 4 (see Saudi Arabia and Yemen).[23]
- Iran’s crude export revenue could fall to zero for the first time by mid-December if the blockade holds, a commodity analyst said, after no Iranian crude was loaded at all in September (see Domestic Affairs).[24]

Saudi Arabia and Yemen
An attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10 killed 12 people and injured 309, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said.[25] The dead were four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and one citizen each of the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan, the authority said.[26] A missile struck a complex housing domestic terminals 3 and 4, a regional official said.[27] The attack came without warning, with no alert issued by Saudi Arabia’s threat warning system.[28] It was the third attack on the airport in a week, after earlier strikes killed four people and heavily damaged a parked Saudi airliner.[29] Authorities diverted all flights and temporarily suspended operations at the airport, which serves a city of roughly 8 million people.[30]
The Saudi-led coalition said a projectile also landed near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam.[31] Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said a Houthi ballistic missile was intercepted over Al-Kharj and a drone was destroyed over the Eastern Province.[32] Al-Kharj, about 80 kilometers southeast of Riyadh, hosts the Prince Sultan air base, which Saudi and US forces operate jointly.[33] The head of the Houthi media office wrote after the strike that the group had “shut down Riyadh international airport.”[34] On October 11, the Houthis renewed their warning to airlines, travelers and airport workers to avoid Saudi airports and airspace, except in Mecca and Medina, and said Saudi Arabia “bears responsibility for any failed interceptions.”[35] The Houthi-run foreign ministry said further Saudi military action would bring a stronger response, warning that “worse is yet to come.”[36]
Flight-tracking estimates showed more than 1,341 flights canceled at the airport over four days, making it the most disrupted airport in the world.[37] Saudi authorities moved all schools to remote learning from October 11 to 15.[38] The energy ministry said the five-day WPC Energy Congress would still open in Riyadh on October 11, at a convention center about 10 kilometers from the airport.[39]
Houthi forces attacked several government positions south and west of Taiz City on October 10, likely as part of an effort to fully encircle and capture Yemen’s third-largest city.[40] Yemeni military sources said government-aligned forces repelled an advance near Wadi al Dhabab, on the city’s southwestern outskirts, and fought heavy battles near Jabal Sabr and Najd Qasim, both less than 10 kilometers south of the city.[41] The Houthis claimed they were securing the Mawasit, Sama and al Salu districts of central Taiz Governorate, a claim not corroborated by verifiable reports as of October 10.[42] Yemen’s health ministry warned on October 10 that medicines, intravenous fluids, medical supplies and fuel at Taiz’s health facilities were “nearing depletion.”[43]
On the coast, the Southern Giants Brigades repelled a Houthi attack north of Dhubab airport on the sixth day of the government’s Operation Dawn of Yemen, according to military reports.[44] Government army spokesman Colonel Majed al-Nuzaili said on October 10 that at least 1,150 Houthis were killed in almost 2,000 operations over 24 hours.[45] A subsequent statement reported on October 11 cited more than 2,750 operations and more than 1,400 Houthi fighters “neutralized,” figures that remain unverified.[46] Houthi media said Saudi aircraft struck the Majz district of Saada province six times overnight.[47]
The Strait of Hormuz and the Blockade
CENTCOM said a US fighter jet struck the stern of the Panama-flagged cargo vessel M/V Ocean Molica, also known as the Arika Sun, in the Gulf of Oman on October 10 after its crew ignored repeated warnings.[48] The precision munition fully disabled the ship’s propulsion without harming the crew, the command said, adding that the vessel had previously departed an Iranian port.[49] CENTCOM said four commercial vessels have been disabled and 135 ships turned around since the blockade resumed on July 14, and that US forces destroyed 10 tankers linked to the IRGC over the same period.[50] British maritime authorities later reported an incident involving a tanker and military forces in the Gulf of Oman, without giving a time.[51] The advisory described a tanker rather than a cargo ship, so it is unconfirmed whether it refers to the Ocean Molica.[52] Democratic Senator Chris Murphy questioned the strike, writing, “Why are taxpayers paying billions to hit commercial ships?”[53]
The IRGC Navy said on October 10 that a supertanker carrying crude oil on an “unauthorized route” through the Strait of Hormuz exploded after hitting a naval mine.[54] The Guard said the ship had switched off its navigation and positioning systems and was burning in a fire visible from the shore.[55] The IRGC statement did not name the vessel, and no independent account confirmed a mine strike by the data cutoff.[56] At 3:20 PM ET on October 10, the master of an outbound tanker in the strait reported being struck on the port side by an unknown projectile that set the ship on fire, British maritime authorities said.[57] The crew was reported safe, and the damage and any environmental impact were unknown.[58] It is unconfirmed whether the projectile report and the IRGC’s mine claim describe the same ship.[59]
Earlier that afternoon, several ship masters near Ras al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates reported being directed by VHF radio broadcast to leave their anchorages, and authorities were investigating.[60] A senior regional official close to Tehran said Iran has warned regional countries that any attempt to open new oil export routes would be considered hostile.[61]
Washington and the Wider Coalition
Asked outside the White House on October 10 whether the United States would join Saudi strikes on the Houthis, Trump said, “We may. We’re going to look at it.”[62] He called the attack “unacceptable” and said he would speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.[63] At a campaign stop in Tennessee the same day, Trump said Iran would “probably do a little bit extra before the election” and added, “we could end it really quick.”[64] Direct US military action against the Houthis would be the first since Operation Rough Rider ended in May 2025.[65] The United States and other partners have expanded intelligence, targeting and air-defense support to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.[66]
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that an American was among the dead and said the attacks “demonstrate a blatant disregard for innocent civilian life” and “must stop now.”[67] US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said the Houthis are “funded,” “empowered” and “trained by Iran,” and that reining in Tehran is “the only way” to stop its proxies.[68] Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif cited the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in reaffirming Pakistan’s “steadfast commitment” to Saudi security.[69] Former Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani wrote that “Iran is our main enemy,” a sharp shift from his 2023 advocacy of negotiations with Tehran.[70] Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, Syria, India, Japan and Canada were among the governments that also condemned the attack.[71]
The Department of War’s news feeds carried no new Middle East item in the window, with the latest war-related story still the October 9 account of the USS Abraham Lincoln’s return.[72] The Pentagon raised its official count of US service members killed in connection with the Iran war to 21 from 18, a revision that included two noncombat deaths, according to a report on October 10.[73] Fifteen of the deaths are now listed as killed during Operation Epic Fury and six as military deaths during overseas operations.[74] Representatives Adam Smith and Chrissy Houlahan said, “There is no excuse for a mistake of this magnitude.”[75] A report on October 10 said Washington had pressed Israel over the past two weeks to carry out a solo strike on Iran before the US midterm elections.[76] Two US officials and one Israeli official denied the report, saying Washington did not ask Israel to strike Iran before the elections.[77]
Israel, Gaza, Lebanon and Syria
The IDF said on October 10 that it killed several members of Hamas’s military wing in strikes in Gaza City, naming Muad Mazen Hamza Hassouna and Muhammad Riyad Khader Arahim.[78] In a separate strike in the Tuffah area, it said, it killed Muhammad Walid Saadi Nakhala, whom it described as commander of Islamic Jihad’s anti-tank array in northern Gaza.[79] The IDF also said it killed Muhammad Abu Shalouf, an Islamic Jihad company commander it said took part in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.[80] The IDF said the men it targeted had advanced attacks against its troops “in systematic violation of the ceasefire agreement.”[81]
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas postponed legislative elections set for November 28 to September 11, 2027, citing Israeli-imposed obstacles.[82] Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called the accusation “yet another ridiculous lie designed to evade responsibility and accountability.”[83]
In southern Lebanon, Iranian state media published video on October 11 that it said showed two Israeli airstrikes on the town of Mansouri, a claim not independently confirmed.[84] In northeastern Syria, Arab demonstrators confronted Kurdish residents in Hasaka.[85] A State Department spokesperson said Washington was “closely monitoring and concerned by reports of unrest in Hasakah” and urged all parties to exercise restraint.[86]
Domestic Affairs
No killing of an IRGC, Quds Force, Basij or regular army member was reported in the window by the sources checked.[87] President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a condolence message on October 10 for Lieutenant Colonel Nosrat Eftekhari, the Sistan and Baluchestan police deputy for cultural and social affairs, who was assassinated in the Cheshmeh Ziarat area of Zahedan.[88] The governor of Faryab County in Kerman Province said the gunman who assassinated police Major Mehdi Jamshidi was killed in a security operation at his hideout.[89] Iran executed a man identified as “Danial” for killing police officer Reza Ehterami, who was run over during clashes with fuel smugglers in Bandar Abbas in 2022, the judiciary said on October 11.[90]
Army Ground Forces commander Brigadier General Ali Jahanshahi said in remarks published early on October 10 that more than 50 combat and support units are deployed along Iran’s borders, from the northwest to the southwest, across the east and on the Makran coast.[91]
Satellite imagery showed repairs to a water tank and a small new building at the Minzadayi compound northeast of Tehran, which Israel struck on March 3, a Washington-based research institute said on October 10.[92] The institute said Iran appears to be seeking to resume regular activities there, though the images do not show what work, if any, has restarted inside.[93] Atomic Energy Organization head Mohammad Eslami accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of yielding to US and Israeli pressure.[94] Nezamoddin Mousavi, a former conservative lawmaker with ties to the IRGC, said in an interview published this week that “nuclear ambiguity did not prevent war” and raised revisiting Iran’s nuclear doctrine and its membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.[95]
A hardline Tehran daily whose editor is appointed by the Supreme Leader accused former foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on October 10 of a “suicidal attack” on national security institutions.[96] The attack followed the circulation of an older video in which Zarif said that if Iran sees the region as a threat, “our ambassadors must be representatives of the Quds Force.”[97]
No Iranian crude or condensate was loaded onto tankers in September, the first full month without loadings since the 1979 revolution, according to commodity-tracking data.[98] Only about 8 million barrels of Iranian crude remain at sea outside the blockade, down from nearly 90 million in mid-July, and the last of it is expected to be discharged around October 18, the data firm’s head of crude analysis said.[99] He estimated that Tehran could lose $3 billion to $6 billion a month in oil income, with crude revenue falling to zero by mid-December.[100] Freight charges from Turkish ports to Iran climbed from about $1,500 to about $8,000 in under two months, Iranian media reported on October 10.[101] About 8,000 trucks are stranded at the Bazargan crossing with Turkey, and drivers at the Rimdan crossing with Pakistan face delays of 20 to 25 days, the same reports said.[102]
The near-total loss of oil income and costlier land routes will likely deepen Iran’s currency and budget strain into the winter, which raises the cost to Tehran of a prolonged standoff.[103] Hardline attacks on Zarif and open debate over nuclear doctrine suggest the leadership’s internal argument over how to answer the war is widening.[104]
War Crimes and Civilian Harm
Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.
The Saudi-led coalition said the October 10 strike on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport amounted to a “fully-fledged war crime” under international humanitarian law, an allegation by a party to the conflict.[105] UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “deeply shocked” and that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international law and “must cease immediately.”[106] UN envoy Hans Grundberg called on the Houthis to halt attacks on civilian infrastructure and to respect international humanitarian law.[107]
Houthi officials accused Saudi Arabia on October 10 of striking Sanaa International Airport, an accusation that has not been independently verified.[108] An air strike in the Sa’wan area of Sanaa Governorate on October 5 killed a child and wounded seven other civilians, according to reporting from the capital published October 11.[109] The same reporting said an earlier strike on Sanaa’s airport during the offensive killed two workers.[110] Yemen’s government accused the Houthis of obstructing essential supplies to Taiz and demanded safe passage for patients, ambulances, health workers and aid.[111]
Gaza’s Health Ministry said at least 1,488 people have been killed and 5,281 injured in the territory since the ceasefire took effect a year ago.[112] A child died of wounds from Israeli gunfire in the Jabalia refugee camp, a medical source at al-Shifa Hospital said on October 11.[113]
Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said on October 11 that an indictment has been issued over the strike on a Minab elementary school on the war’s first day, which Iran says killed 156 people, including 120 children.[114] The United States has not accepted responsibility for that attack, Gharibabadi said.[115] He also called the alleged US use of a sports stadium in Lamerd to test a new weapon a war crime, a claim not independently confirmed in the sources checked.[116]
Statements by Military Leaders
CENTCOM said, “All mariners are advised to heed blockade warnings from CENTCOM forces.”[117] The coalition’s Joint Forces Command said in a statement that it “will respond to this terrorist attack firmly and in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules.”[118] UK Defense Minister Wes Streeting called the Riyadh strike “a dangerous escalation” and said Britain is giving Saudi Arabia “air defenses, but also air-to-air refueling.”[119] The IDF said the Gaza commanders it struck “were eliminated in order to remove the threat that they posed.”[120] The Houthis said in a post on October 11, “We urge everyone to take our warnings seriously.”[121]
Iranian Leadership
No new public statement by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was found in the window.[122] In his condolence message for the slain police officer, President Pezeshkian said “blind terrorist acts” would “achieve nothing beyond shedding the blood of innocent people.”[123] In a call on October 11, Pezeshkian invited Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to visit Tehran and praised Oman’s efforts for regional peace, state media reported.[124] Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s most recent statement found was a post on X on the night of October 9, before this window.[125] Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, replying to Trump’s remarks about Los Angeles and San Diego, wrote, “To frighten their own people, they conjure up an imaginary enemy in the sky to overshadow the real threat on the ground.”[126] Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told a Tehran conference on wartime environmental damage on October 11 that the world must move beyond expressing concern and hold perpetrators accountable.[127] Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran’s response to any renewed military aggression would differ from its previous reactions.[128] Habibollah Sayyari, the army’s deputy coordinator, said, “We have dealt blows to enemy vessels, and if something happens against Iran again, we will strike at them.”[129] The IRGC Navy warned that “a terrible fire is the end result of any law-breaking tanker” that ignores its rules in the strait.[130] No statements in the window were found from the IRGC commander-in-chief, the Armed Forces General Staff or the Supreme National Security Council secretary.[131]
What to Watch (Assessment)
Trump’s decision on joining Saudi strikes, which he said would come quickly, is the main test of whether the Yemen war becomes a direct US fight.[132] The coalition’s promised response to the Riyadh attack, and whether the Houthis strike during the energy congress week, will show how far the air war widens.[133] The last Iranian crude outside the blockade is due to discharge around October 18, after which Tehran’s oil receipts will depend on payments already in the pipeline.[134] Any confirmed mine strike in the Strait of Hormuz would mark a new phase in Iran’s counter-blockade.[135] Fighting at Jabal Sabr, Najd Qasim and al Shaqab will likely decide whether the Houthis complete the encirclement of Taiz.[136]
Six lenses
Analysis
Geography
The war’s sharpest edge moved on October 10 from Yemen’s coast to the Saudi capital, where the third strike in a week on King Khalid International Airport made the Houthis’ declared ban on Saudi airspace deadly (see Saudi Arabia and Yemen).[1] At the other end of the theater, both the US blockade and Iran’s counter-blockade are now being enforced outside the strait itself, in the Gulf of Oman and off Ras al-Khaimah (see The Strait of Hormuz and the Blockade).[2] Inside Yemen, Taiz remains the ground war’s pivot, because Houthi pressure on several approaches south and west of the city threatens to complete its encirclement.[3]
Military
The Houthis have shown they can repeatedly get missiles through to the Saudi capital, since the October 10 strike arrived with no alert from the kingdom’s warning system.[4] US enforcement of the blockade has moved from turning ships around to disabling them from the air, which raises the risk for any crew that ignores warnings.[5] Iran is pairing claimed mine and projectile incidents with warnings to non-compliant tankers, which suggests it is trying to make unauthorized routes physically dangerous rather than only politically costly.[6]
Alliances
The Riyadh attack drew condemnation from Washington, London, the United Nations, Arab governments and Asian and Western capitals, widening the circle that treats Houthi strikes on Saudi civilians as a shared problem (see Washington and the Wider Coalition).[7] Pakistan’s prime minister invoked the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement by name, giving the new Saudi-Pakistani pact its first public test under fire.[8] The Iranian president’s invitation to Oman’s sultan keeps a mediation channel open just as prominent Gulf voices harden against Tehran.[9]
Economics
The blockade is now cutting Iran’s oil income at the source rather than only delaying sales, as the last Iranian cargoes outside it near discharge (see Domestic Affairs).[10] Iran’s overland substitute is congested and expensive, with Turkey-to-Iran freight rates up more than fivefold and thousands of trucks stranded at the Bazargan crossing.[11] The closure of Riyadh’s main airport on the eve of a five-day energy congress shows the Houthi campaign now threatens the kingdom’s commercial standing as well as its infrastructure.[12]
Technology
Air-launched precision munitions aimed at a ship’s stern give US forces a graduated way to stop blockade runners without sinking them, if CENTCOM’s account that the crew was unharmed holds.[13] Iran’s claimed use of naval mines on routes it calls unauthorized, if confirmed, would add a hazard that escorts and air power cannot quickly remove.[14] Successful Saudi intercepts elsewhere on the same day, set against the silent strike on Riyadh, point to coverage gaps rather than a collapse of the kingdom’s air defenses.[15]
Power
The death of an American in Riyadh and Trump’s statement that the United States ‘may’ join Saudi strikes raise the chance of the first direct US military action against the Houthis since May 2025.[16] Iran’s collapsing oil revenue strengthens Washington’s hand in any settlement, while the Pentagon’s revised toll of 21 US service members killed underlines the war’s continuing cost.[17] Tehran’s warning that its response to any renewed attack would differ from before, together with a senior commander’s pledge to keep striking ships ‘if necessary,’ keeps the threat to US forces and shipping in place during the pre-midterm pause.[18]
