Iran and the Strait of Hormuz
The IRGC Navy said on October 9 that its forces struck the “NV Sunshine,” which it called a giant liquefied petroleum gas carrier, as the ship tried to use an unauthorized route south of the Strait of Hormuz.[26] It said the strike caused a large fire in the vessel’s engine room and propulsion system.[27] Earlier that day, the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre reported that a vessel 13 nautical miles west of Al Jazirah Al Hamra in the United Arab Emirates had been struck by an unknown projectile, causing a fire that was later extinguished.[28] The centre said the crew’s condition, the damage and any environmental impact were unknown.[29] A British maritime security firm identified the ship hit off the UAE as the Panama-flagged crude tanker GEM NO2, not the vessel the Guard named.[30] The accounts conflict, and it is unconfirmed whether they describe one ship or two.[31]
The Guard’s statement went further than its earlier warnings by saying enforcement would “no longer be confined” to the strait and that ships on unauthorized routes would be pursued anywhere in the region.[32] It also said shipping companies it accuses of cooperating with the United States would be sanctioned and all their vessels targeted.[33] The statement blamed Washington for the incidents, accusing it of interfering in the decisions of shipping and insurance companies and paying “large bribes.”[34] The threat is likely meant to deter shipping firms from following non-Iranian routes, including ships that have already transited safely, analysts tracking the war assessed.[35]
CENTCOM said on October 9 that US forces had redirected 133 commercial vessels to enforce the blockade of Iranian ports.[36] President Donald Trump said the same day that 28 million barrels of oil had passed through the strait the previous day.[37] Eleven ships had been struck in or near the strait or off Oman so far in October, according to a tally drawing on International Maritime Organization and UK maritime data.[38] The same tally counted 12 attacks between September 28 and October 6, the highest weekly total of the war.[39] The latest available data show oil exports from Gulf producers other than Iran back at pre-war levels in recent days.[40]
Washington, Moscow and the Talks
Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on October 9, and the Kremlin said the situation around Iran was “touched upon” alongside Ukraine.[41] Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said Putin, “in coordination with the president of Iran,” conveyed to Trump the Iranian side’s view on a possible resolution of the conflict.[42] Trump said after the call that Putin agreed to supply 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons after that.[43] A day earlier, Putin had told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan that Russia was ready to do “everything” in its power to help settle the conflict.[44]
Trump told a Columbus Day event at the White House on October 9 that fuel prices “will come tumbling” and that the war would be “over soon, one way or the other.”[45] He also said Iran has “no military,” “no navy” and “no air force.”[46] In a later social media post, he wrote that he was “about to settle, or win” the war with Iran.[47]
In a television interview on October 8, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington had moved from a maximum pressure campaign to “an absolute isolation campaign.”[48] He said the United States would “probably” seize about $1 billion in Iran-linked cryptocurrency this week.[49] Bessent named the United Arab Emirates and Oman as partners and said Washington was working with Pakistan and Turkey to cut Iran’s overland trade routes.[50]
Western officials familiar with intelligence assessments said on October 9 that Iran still holds substantial ballistic missile stocks and some anti-ship weapons and can produce more relatively quickly.[51] One official said Russia has been supplying Iran with missiles.[52] White House spokesperson Anna Kelly rejected the assessment, saying Trump “obliterated Iran’s nuclear facilities” and defending the results of the air campaign.[53]
A War Department account of the USS Abraham Lincoln’s deployment, published on October 9, said its strike group flew nearly 4,000 combat sorties in 40 days of major combat operations against Iran.[54] The account said task force units destroyed more than 100 Iranian drone, missile and small-boat attacks on the force.[55]
Yemen, the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia
Government-aligned forces, including the Giants Brigades and Homeland Shield Forces, secured al Aradi on a peninsula jutting into the Bab al-Mandab and reportedly seized Perim Island on October 9.[56] Military sources said the forces had full control of the strait’s shoreline, the al Aradi camp, coast guard posts and the surrounding heights.[57] Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen said on October 9 that the Bab al-Mandab had been cleared of Houthis.[58] That claim was not independently verified, and Houthi forces remain in Mokha farther up the coast.[59] The advance followed the capture of the Jabal Kahbub heights reported in the October 9 update, which may have enabled it.[60]
Government-aligned forces recaptured al Misrakh in Taiz Governorate on October 9 after Houthi forces briefly held the town, geolocated footage indicates.[61] Fighting continued near Jabal Habashi, about 15 kilometers south of Taiz City, where Houthi control would complete the city’s encirclement.[62] Local sources said Houthi forces took al-Mahsha, al-Adaf and al-Armah in Jabal Habashi district, and a schoolteacher was reportedly killed in al-Mahsha.[63] The Houthis have also cut a key road into Taiz, a city of more than half a million people.[64]
The Saudi-led coalition said on October 9 that it destroyed three missile launch platforms used by the Houthis.[65] Saudi aircraft struck missile launch sites, depots and a radar station in Sanaa Governorate and fortifications in Amran, according to regional media.[66] Yemeni army spokesman Col. Majed al-Nuzaili claimed 1,729 precision strikes and 1,370 Houthi fighters killed or wounded since the operation began, figures that could not be verified.[67]
The Houthis repeated their threat on October 9 against aircraft flying over Saudi Arabia, except above Mecca and Medina, calling Saudi airspace a theater of operations.[68] Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said only Houthi-approved airlines would be allowed to land in Riyadh, for “humanitarian” purposes.[69] The European Union Aviation Safety Agency extended the area in which it advises airlines not to fly, citing the attacks on Riyadh airport.[70] The US embassy in the UAE told Americans to exercise increased vigilance, warning that hostilities could escalate rapidly.[71] Riyadh is due to host the WPC Energy Congress of oil ministers and executives from October 11, and Italy’s energy minister said he would take part by video.[72]
Israel, Gaza, Lebanon and Syria
The IDF said on October 9 that it struck Yusuf Ali al-Hassoun, a Syrian it said worked “under the direction of the Iranian regime” to plan attacks on Israeli civilians and troops in southern Syria.[73] Medical sources said the drone strike on a vehicle in Hawsh al-Sayyed Ali, in Baalbek-Hermel province near the Syrian border, left six people with minor injuries.[74] Lebanon’s state news agency reported Israeli artillery fire on Wadi Zibqin, Mansouri, Majdal Zoun and the outskirts of several southern towns on October 9, and an airstrike near Kfar Tebnit.[75] The offensive has killed at least 4,386 people in Lebanon since March 2, according to the health ministry’s latest figures, issued September 25.[76]
In Gaza, the IDF and the Israel Security Agency said strikes on October 9 destroyed four Hamas and Islamic Jihad weapons depots holding rockets, explosive devices and mortars.[77] Troops in northern Gaza killed a man who crossed the Yellow Line and approached them, the IDF said.[78] Hospital sources said at least six Palestinians, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed by Israeli fire across the Strip on the morning of October 10.[79] Washington has committed more than $206 million to the proposed International Stabilization Force for Gaza, which remains unassembled.[80]
The European Union is expected to formally establish a three-year military support mission to Lebanon on October 12 to train the army and internal security forces.[81] An EU official said its first contingent of at least 100 French, Italian and Spanish personnel will deploy to Beirut by December 25 and will not operate in southern Lebanon.[82] Lebanese security forces arrested two Hezbollah members carrying 500 kilograms of high explosives on the Beirut-Damascus highway, a security source said.[83]
Iraq
Iraq has created a unit inside the Popular Mobilization Forces to take over drones held by armed factions, an Iraqi security official said.[84] Three militias that agreed to disarm have handed over only some heavy and specialized weapons and bases, the official said.[85] Iran fired two drones at a camp of the Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan near Erbil on October 8, its first such attack since the US withdrawal from Iraq on September 30, local media and open-source analysts reported.[86]
Domestic Affairs
A roadside bomb near Zahedan killed Nosrat Eftekhari, a deputy police commander in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, on October 9, IRGC-affiliated media reported.[87] Another state-affiliated account said the main bomber was killed while fleeing and that several police officers were wounded.[88] The Mobarizoun Popular Front, a Baluch anti-regime coalition, carried out the bombing, the IRGC-affiliated reports said.[89]
A Baluch rights group raised the toll from attacks on October 7 and 8 to at least five military and police personnel killed, including three police commandos in the Nosratabad area.[90] It named police Maj. Mehdi Jamshidi as shot dead in central Faryab, Kerman Province, in a killing no group had claimed.[91] IRGC-affiliated media separately reported on October 9 that a gunman killed a police officer in Faryab, and it is unconfirmed whether this is the same killing.[92] No new killing of an IRGC, Quds Force or Basij member, or of a regular army soldier, was reported in the window by the sources checked.[93]
IRGC Ground Forces took part in a Shanghai Cooperation Organization counterterrorism exercise in Minsk on October 7 and 8, regime media reported.[94] The head of Iran’s Crisis Management Organization, Hossein Sajedinia, recommended moving fuel storage tanks out of Tehran to protect civilians from possible US or Israeli strikes.[95] Tehran’s Friday prayer leader said on October 9 that any expectation the strait would reopen before Iran’s seven conditions are met is “an illusion.”[96]
Iran executed at least 2,003 people between October 10, 2025, and October 8, 2026, a 29% increase on the previous year, the rights group HRANA reported on October 9.[97] HRANA counted 69 political or security executions, 35 of them linked to the January 2026 protests.[98] A 17-year-old, Omid Ghanouni, died in custody in Isfahan Province on October 6 after Basij members beat him during his arrest, a source familiar with the case said, though no forensic report has confirmed the account.[99] The State Department’s 2026 trafficking report, released October 8, said the IRGC “recruited and deployed young children as soldiers.”[100]
The head of the state power company said about 4,700 megawatts of industrial and petrochemical generating capacity is offline and that Iran is seeking imports from Turkey and Turkmenistan.[101] The rial traded near 2.7 million to the dollar this week despite central bank support.[102] Some hardliners urged Tehran to use the three weeks before the US midterms to strike first, while a former chairman of parliament’s national security committee argued that Trump’s no-strike pledge was meant to deter such a move.[103] Ahmad Bakhshayesh, a member of parliament’s national security committee, dismissed the Saudi-Pakistani-Turkish defense pact as a “paper and political pact.”[104] Iran-origin operators used ChatGPT to help seven fake journalist personas place almost 100 articles in about a dozen outlets, OpenAI said on October 8.[105]
The insurgency in Sistan and Baluchestan is likely forcing Tehran to keep police and army units tied down in the southeast while it prepares for a possible renewed US campaign.[106] Rising executions and a falling currency suggest the leadership is relying on repression to manage a weakening economy, which probably narrows its room for compromise in talks.[107]
Statements by Military Leaders
Rear Adm. Robert Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, said the Lincoln and its strike group “set a new standard of excellence” during the deployment.[108] Capt. Dan Keeler, the carrier’s commanding officer, said the crew was “literally rewriting the book of what an aircraft carrier is capable of.”[109] Saudi-led coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said, “Houthi attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure will be met with a firm response.”[110] The IRGC Navy said, “Direct responsibility for these incidents and the escalation of tensions in maritime transport in the region lies with the aggressive US army.”[111]
Iranian Leadership
No new statement by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was found in the window.[112] State media on October 9 carried the full text of his Police Week message, which called police service “a form of jihad on the path of God.”[113] President Pezeshkian told a regional summit in Turkmenistan, “Negotiation conducted in the shadow of force is not negotiation, it is imposition and coercion.”[114] Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote that Israel’s prime minister was seeking to save himself “with more U.S. blood and treasure” and that even US senators “want out.”[115] Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei called Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s October 7 Athens speech “a manufactured narrative designed to authorize U.S. militancy.”[116] Ali Akbar Velayati, the Supreme Leader’s adviser on international affairs, answered the same speech: “Mr. Rubio, your problem is not with the Islamic Revolution.”[117] No statements in the window were found from Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Armed Forces General Staff or the Supreme National Security Council secretary.[118]
What to Watch (Assessment)
Whether the IRGC strikes a ship outside the strait in the coming days will show if its regional threat is policy or signaling.[119] Any US response to Iran’s terms relayed through Moscow, and Iran’s reply to the US response on its seven-day Hormuz plan, are the main diplomatic tests before November 3.[120] The WPC Energy Congress opening in Riyadh on October 11 will test whether Houthi threats to Saudi airspace deter foreign delegations and airlines.[121] Control of Jabal Habashi will likely decide whether Taiz City is fully encircled.[122] Another deadly attack on security forces in Sistan and Baluchestan would confirm a sustained insurgent campaign rather than a passing spike.[123]
Six lenses
Analysis
In the Middle East war on October 9 and 10, 2026, the main change since the October 9 update is that Iran openly claimed a tanker strike and said it will pursue ships beyond the Strait of Hormuz.[1]
Geography
The maritime fight has shifted to the strait’s southern, Omani-side lane, the route ships have used to avoid Iranian control (see Iran and the Strait of Hormuz).[2] At the other end of the Arabian Peninsula, government control of Perim Island and the al Aradi shore removes the Houthi positions closest to the Bab al-Mandab shipping lane.[3] Taiz remains the ground war’s weak point, because the Houthi ring around the city limits how far government gains on the coast can be exploited.[4]
Military
Iran is now using strikes and public threats together to impose its own transit rules, rather than leaving attacks unclaimed as it did earlier in the week.[5] The US blockade continues to grind on, with CENTCOM’s count of diverted vessels showing steady enforcement rather than escalation (see Iran and the Strait of Hormuz).[6] In Yemen, the Saudi-backed offensive has gained ground on the coast, while Saudi strikes on launchers in the north aim at the missile fire hitting the kingdom.[7]
Alliances
Moscow has placed itself between Washington and Tehran by carrying Iran’s position into a presidential call that also produced a US-Russia diesel deal (see Washington, Moscow and the Talks).[8] Tehran’s sharper criticism of Pakistan suggests the Saudi-Pakistani-Turkish pact is straining one of the mediation channels it relies on.[9] Washington is also recruiting regional partners to close Iran’s overland trade, widening the economic front of the war (see Washington, Moscow and the Talks).[10]
Economics
Oil prices suggest the pre-midterm pause has eased fears of a wider war without removing the shipping risk, since crude fell on Trump’s talk of productive negotiations but still headed for a weekly gain.[11] Iran’s economy is absorbing compounding shocks, with the rial near record lows and thousands of megawatts of industrial power offline (see Domestic Affairs).[12] Houthi threats to Saudi airspace now carry a direct commercial cost, since they come days before Riyadh hosts a major energy congress.[13]
Technology
Western officials’ assessment that Iran can still produce missiles and drones, and that Russia is supplying missiles, cuts against official US claims that Iran’s defense industry has been destroyed (see Washington, Moscow and the Talks).[14] The disclosure that Iran-linked operators used commercial AI tools for influence work, and in one case for help with naval targeting, shows the information and targeting fight moving onto Western platforms.[15] The Lincoln strike group’s record of defeating more than 100 Iranian drone, missile and small-boat attacks suggests US naval air defenses can protect warships, but not the commercial traffic Iran is now targeting.[16]
Power
For the United States, the IRGC threat to ships outside the strait directly challenges CENTCOM’s claim that the main lanes are open to all vessels not breaking the blockade.[17] Public insistence in Tehran that the strait will stay closed until Iran’s seven conditions are met suggests it is using the pause to bargain rather than to de-escalate.[18] Government gains at the Bab al-Mandab serve a US interest in keeping the Red Sea route open while US forces stay out of the Yemen ground war.[19]
