September 2026 Roundup: Israel, Hezbollah and Southern Lebanon
Israel takes the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, the UN warns of 20,000 displaced, and a Gaza drone accident: September in review.
BEIRUT / JERUSALEM — In September 2026, Israel’s war with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon centered on one piece of high ground, the Ali al-Taher ridge near Nabatieh. Israel announced its capture, destroyed the tunnel complex beneath it and declared that its self-described security zone in Lebanon was complete, while Lebanese authorities and the United Nations reported rising civilian deaths and displacement. In Gaza, two Israeli reservists were killed by their own drone. This roundup brings our September briefs together in one dated timeline, with official statements first, and closes with our analysis.
September timeline
Sept. 3–4: Israel claims the Ali al-Taher ridge
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the capture of the Ali al-Taher ridge completed a phase of securing Israel’s declared security zone in southern Lebanon, and that Israeli forces would stay until Hezbollah was disarmed, Asharq Al-Awsat reported. Katz said Hezbollah had used the ridge to fire on Israeli targets and had built a tunnel network there. FDD’s Long War Journal noted that the claim followed weeks of Hezbollah attacks and failed handover efforts. Original report: Israel’s Katz Hails Capture of Ali Tahar Ridge in South Lebanon.
Sept. 6: Four killed after a reported drone launch
Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least four people, including two women in Arab Salim, according to Lebanese authorities cited by Al Jazeera. Israel said Hezbollah had launched two explosive drones toward its troops and that one was intercepted, with no Israeli casualties. Israel later issued an evacuation warning for a building in Arab Salim before further strikes. Original report: Four Killed in Southern Lebanon as Israel–Hezbollah Truce Is Tested.
Sept. 7–8: Twelve killed, including two children
Israeli airstrikes on a village in southern Lebanon killed 12 people, including two children, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said, the AP reported. The strikes hit Kfar Rumman, near Nabatieh. Israel again said it was responding to Hezbollah explosive-drone attacks on its troops near the ridge, Naharnet reported. Original report: Israeli Strikes Kill at Least 12 in Southern Lebanon, Two Children.
Sept. 8–9: The UN condemns operations as 20,000 flee
The UN Secretary-General, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, condemned Israeli operations around Nabatieh and called for withdrawal consistent with Security Council Resolution 1701, UN News reported. The UN humanitarian office, OCHA, estimated that about 20,000 people had fled Nabatieh in the previous week. UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL) recorded 528 Israeli projectiles between Thursday and Monday and 62 Israeli airspace violations on Sunday alone. Original report: UN Condemns Israeli Operations Around Nabatieh as 20,000 Flee.
Sept. 10–11: Israel blows up the tunnel complex
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz said Israeli forces had destroyed Hezbollah’s underground complex beneath the ridge and that Israel’s security zone in southern Lebanon was now complete, The National reported. The Israeli military described more than two kilometers of tunnels, weapons stores and a command complex. Lebanon’s state news agency reported a powerful blast felt across the Nabatieh area. Original report: Israel Blows Hezbollah’s Ali al-Taher Tunnel Complex in South Lebanon.
Sept. 13–14: Katz warns he will “eliminate” anyone who approaches
Katz said Israel would “eliminate” anyone who approached the Ali al-Taher ridge and that its forces would not withdraw until Hezbollah was disarmed across Lebanon, Israel National News reported. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported new Israeli strikes and shelling across the Nabatieh area the same day. Original report: Israel’s Katz Threatens to ‘Eliminate’ Anyone Nearing Ali al-Taher.
Sept. 24–25: Two reservists killed by their own drone in Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces said two reserve officers, Maj. (res.) Nadav Kali, 24, and Maj. (res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, were killed when an explosive drone they were operating crashed inside their outpost in northern Gaza and detonated as they approached it, Ynet reported. The military temporarily grounded attack drones across combat sectors while it investigated, JNS reported. Original report: Two IDF Reservists Killed by Their Own Drone at Northern Gaza Outpost.
Sept. 25: Raid near Kfar Shuba
Lebanon’s National News Agency said Israeli forces entered the outskirts of Kfar Shuba in the Hasbaya district and surrounded a farm where shepherds were present, Anadolu reported. The agency also reported Israeli drone strikes and shelling in the Nabatieh district the same day. The Express Tribune, citing Israeli media, reported that the Israeli army was preparing a new phase of fighting in southern Lebanon. Analysis: a front that moved from fighting to holding
This section is Peter’s World analysis, based on the official statements and reports cited above.
September marked a change in what Israel says it is doing in southern Lebanon. Early in the month, the fighting was about taking the Ali al-Taher ridge. By Sept. 11, Israeli leaders said the security zone was complete, and by Sept. 14 Katz was describing a permanent holding mission with a standing threat against anyone who comes near. A zone that Israel says it will hold until Hezbollah is disarmed across all of Lebanon has no clear end date, because that condition depends on Lebanese politics that Israel does not control.
The civilian picture moved the other way. The UN’s figures, 20,000 people displaced from the Nabatieh area and hundreds of projectiles in a few days, describe a district emptying out around the ridge. Lebanese casualty reports through the month, from four killed on Sept. 6 to 12 killed on Sept. 8, show that the area beyond the zone remains an active strike area. The UN’s reference to Resolution 1701, which calls for Israel’s withdrawal and for no armed groups other than the Lebanese state south of the Litani, sets out the legal case that Lebanon and its partners will press in talks.
Israel’s own losses in September came mostly from Gaza, and the drone accident there points to a broader risk: as both armies rely more on cheap explosive drones, accidents and misidentification become a growing share of casualties. The main thing to watch in October is whether talks produce any withdrawal timetable, or whether the security zone becomes a long-term line like the one Israel held in southern Lebanon until 2000.
