Coverage window: October 7, 2026, ~7:30 AM ET to October 8, 2026, ~7:30 AM ET

Key Takeaways

  1. Houthi strikes on Saudi airports turned deadly, killing three people and injuring 36 in Abha and Riyadh, and the Saudi-led coalition answered by destroying 82 Houthi targets across four Yemeni provinces.[1]
  2. Houthi forces severed the last government-held road into Taiz City, a gain that outweighs the government’s modest advances on the coast and in Marib.[2]
  3. Attacks on shipping are spreading beyond the Strait of Hormuz, with a tanker hit 51 nautical miles north of Qatar after the war’s worst week for tanker attacks.[3]
  4. CENTCOM rejected an Iranian claim that the Strait of Hormuz is closed, saying the United States and regional partners clearly control it, even as Iran and Oman said they had agreed on safe-route coordinates.[4]
  5. Washington is weighing renewed strikes on Iran, possibly before the November 3 midterms, as the Secretary of War decorated the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group for its combat record.[5]

Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the US Blockade

A tanker reported being struck by multiple projectiles about 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, at 3:00 PM ET on October 7, and casualties were reported.[6] A maritime security firm identified the vessel as the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged tanker Acers, though the number of casualties has not been disclosed.[7] It was the first reported attack on a merchant ship outside the strait since September 9, when a bunker tanker was hit at anchor off the United Arab Emirates.[8] The strike followed the war’s most intense week for tanker attacks, with three maritime security sources counting at least 12 attacks on oil and gas tankers around the strait between September 28 and October 5.[9] The US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center has reported that Revolutionary Guard drone overflights, surveillance and radio hailing of ships continue in the strait.[10] Iran may have used the pause in US strikes since September 8 to rebuild the coastal radars it relies on to find and target ships, analysts tracking the war said.[11]

Mohammad Reza Naghdi, a senior adviser to the Revolutionary Guard commander-in-chief, said on October 7 that “the Strait of Hormuz is closed” and that Iranian forces would block what he called unauthorized routes.[12] CENTCOM branded the claim false that evening and said traffic was flowing through the strait carrying commercial goods and energy supplies, including 20 million barrels of crude oil.[13] Speaking in Athens the same day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the strait is open, that about as much oil is flowing as before the conflict and that Iran has “lost complete control” of the waterway.[14] Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on October 7 that Iran and Oman had agreed on the coordinates of safe transit lanes through the strait and on how to notify the relevant international body.[15]

On the nuclear file, Rubio said “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, simple, period, and end of story,” and that any acceptable deal must guarantee it never acquires one.[16] He added that Iran’s economy is “in total and complete freefall” under crippling sanctions.[17] A senior Iranian official involved in the indirect talks replied on October 7 that US demands, including Vice President JD Vance’s call for a “meaningful” cut in enrichment capacity, clash with Tehran’s and that US recognition of Iran’s right to enrich is a red line.[18] Meanwhile, two administration officials said the White House has asked the Pentagon for options to strike Iran before the November 3 midterm elections and that CENTCOM is drawing them up.[19] No decision has been made, and a White House official said only that the president “has all options available at any time.”[20] A US official and a second person familiar with the deliberations said the national security team has discussed resuming large-scale operations in Iran within weeks.[21]

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth boarded the USS Abraham Lincoln at sea off California on October 7, a day before the carrier returned to San Diego from a 321-day deployment that included a record 264 consecutive days at sea without a port call.[22] Hegseth told the crew the strike group flew 3,693 combat sorties, dropped 1.37 million pounds of ordnance, launched 450 Tomahawk cruise missiles, shot down 77 one-way attack drones and sank 64 Iranian warships.[23] He then awarded the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group the Presidential Unit Citation for “extraordinary heroism against enemy forces.”[24] In theater, CENTCOM said Marines deployed in the Middle East briefed Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Carlos Ruiz this week on the command’s use of low-cost one-way attack drones.[25]

Yemen, the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said on October 7 that two separate attacks on October 6 and 7 hit Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.[26] The Abha strike killed two foreign residents, a Moroccan woman and an Algerian woman, and injured 28 people.[27] In Riyadh, a Sudanese resident was killed and eight people were hurt, five of them Saudi citizens.[28] Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed six further strikes on Saudi airports and military bases between the afternoons of October 6 and 7.[29] On October 8, Saree said a ballistic missile had struck King Khalid International Airport and disrupted operations, and he warned airlines “for the last time” to stay out of Saudi airspace outside Mecca and Medina.[30] A witness reported several explosions in Riyadh on the morning of October 8, including a large blast at the airport that halted departures and forced the terminal’s evacuation.[31] Saudi authorities had not explained the blasts by the data cutoff.[32]

Saudi Arabia hit back: coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said on October 8 that coalition forces destroyed 82 Houthi military targets in Saada, Hudaydah, al-Jawf and Marib governorates, including 11 ballistic-missile storage sites dug into the mountains of Saada.[33] He said the launcher used in the October 7 missile attack on Riyadh was destroyed in Sanaa as Houthi fighters readied it for another strike.[34]

On the ground, the Houthis pressed north and east in Taiz Governorate and severed the last government-held road linking Taiz City to Aden and the rest of government territory.[35] Geolocated imagery from October 7 shows Houthi fighters in control of Najd al Nashamah, a town on that road.[36] They also advanced in al Maafir and Mawasit districts, contesting further stretches of the Taiz-Aden route.[37] Government-aligned forces made limited gains on the Marib front, where they reportedly seized the Umm Rish military camp on October 7.[38] Local sources in Aden reported that the latest Houthi strike on the city’s airport may have hit Pakistani-supplied equipment, after a Pakistani official said four cargo planes carrying light artillery and drones reached government forces there in September.[39] The latest round of fighting has killed nearly 1,000 people and displaced more than 200,000.[40]

Israel and Gaza

The IDF said on October 7 that it killed two Hamas operatives after they left Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, one of whom had planted explosives taken from the hospital near the Yellow Line to target troops.[41] It said the second man, Muhammad Tammous, had been “presented to the world as a ‘civil defense worker'” but was a sniper in Hamas’s military wing.[42] Hamas called the account “false and baseless,” while medical sources in Gaza said the man was a civil defense member killed on his way to a rescue near the hospital.[43] On October 8 the IDF announced the killing of Ibrahim Alam, a Hamas military-wing commander who it said took part in the October 7, 2023, massacre and in carrying the body of Sergeant Shaked Dahan into Gaza, along with Hamas operative Mu’tasem Muhammad Suleiman Salah.[44] The military said both men had recently been advancing attacks on Israeli civilians and troops in “systematic violation of the ceasefire.”[45] In southern Gaza, troops killed a militant on October 7 who had crossed the Yellow Line and tried to sabotage military infrastructure, the IDF said on October 8.[46]

In the West Bank, IDF combat engineers demolished the Bidu home of the gunman who killed Netanel Chkroun on September 21, the eve of Yom Kippur.[47] Troops, Border Police and Shin Bet officers also detained dozens of people whom the military described as inciters who had voiced support for the October 7 massacre.[48] On the diplomatic front, Britain agreed to downgrade its consulate in east Jerusalem to a UK Mission after Israel demanded its closure over a British ban on trade with West Bank settlements, and Israel’s foreign minister said 20 British diplomats will leave.[49]

Lebanon

Israeli artillery shelled Mansouri and the Zibqin Valley on the morning of October 8, following pre-dawn fire around Haddatha and Baraachit, while Israeli drones flew low over Tyre.[50] A day earlier, several rounds of small-arms fire from an unidentified source hit a UNIFIL position near Kfar Shouba on the Blue Line, causing no casualties, and the force opened an investigation.[51] The peacekeeping mission’s mandate is due to expire on December 31.[52] Israeli forces still hold parts of southern Lebanon despite the June 26 framework agreement, which provides for a phased Israeli withdrawal and a Lebanese army deployment in the areas Israel vacates.[53] Lebanese authorities put the toll of Israel’s war on Lebanon since March 2 at 4,386 killed and 12,413 injured.[54]

Statements by Military Leaders

Hegseth told the Lincoln crew that the president wanted to thank them “for what you did in Epic Fury, ensuring that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon,” and called the follow-on blockade “impenetrable from day one.”[55] Rejecting media critics who cast the carrier as “a symbol of dysfunction or a symbol of low morale or a symbol of a failed mission,” he said, “I know it’s the exact opposite.”[56] Naghdi said the range of Iran’s weapons is capped by policy rather than technology and that “whenever the supreme leader gives authorization, we will increase the range of our weapons.”[57] Al-Maliki said Houthi attacks on civilians and civilian sites “will not go unpunished.”[58] Abu Ubaida, spokesman for Hamas’s military wing, marked the anniversary on October 7 by calling the 2023 attack a “military miracle” and urging wider action against Israel from Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran.[59] The IDF said its troops remain deployed in Gaza under the ceasefire agreement “and will continue to act to remove any immediate threat.”[60]

What to Watch (Assessment)

The loss of the Taiz-Aden road will likely leave government forces in Taiz City short of reinforcements and supplies, making a Houthi push on the city the gravest near-term risk to the counteroffensive.[61] Further Houthi fire on Riyadh after Saree’s “last” warning would test whether international airlines keep flying in Saudi airspace and whether the coalition widens its strikes beyond the four provinces it hit.[62] Formal attribution of the attack off Qatar will show whether Iran is extending its campaign into Gulf waters that had seen few attacks since early September.[63] Whether shipping follows the Iran-Oman route coordinates or US-protected lanes will indicate who sets the terms of passage through Hormuz in practice.[64] White House deliberations on strikes before the midterms, set against Iran’s red line on enrichment, remain the main indicator of whether the blockade phase gives way to renewed combat.[65]
