Key Takeaways

  1. Yemen is the most volatile front, with the government announcing a campaign on October 4 to retake all Houthi-held territory just as security sources said the Houthis had cut the main supply road into Taiz.[1]
  2. The Strait of Hormuz remains contested, because Iran’s parliament speaker restated seven conditions for reopening it on October 4 and another tanker was struck the same day.[2]
  3. Washington is signalling readiness without committing, with the defense secretary saying on October 3 that the president will keep all options on the table while declining to say whether the Theodore Roosevelt strike group will be sent to the Middle East.[3]
  4. In Gaza, the October 3 strike on Hamas’s top official in the territory strained the ceasefire, and his fate was still unconfirmed on October 4.[4]
  5. In Iraq, Iran-aligned armed factions are resisting disarmament after the coalition’s September 30 withdrawal, with Kataib Hezbollah insisting it is not bound by any political time frame.[5]

Iran and the Strait of Hormuz

A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, October 4, damaging its engine room.[6] The alert left unclear when the strike occurred, where the vessel was headed and whether it was an oil tanker or an LNG carrier.[7] The incident followed attacks on October 2 in which projectiles hit an outbound tanker in the strait and an oil tanker about four nautical miles east of Oman.[8] The IRGC Navy likely carried out those October 2 attacks.[9] Five Indian nationals were brought ashore in Oman after the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III was struck by a projectile in the strait, the Indian Embassy in Oman said.[10] Iranian media claimed separately that two oil tankers had exploded in the strait and alleged that both had switched off their tracking systems.[11]

Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said on October 4 that the strait would not reopen until Iran’s seven conditions, based on the Islamabad Memorandum, are met.[12] Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi echoed that firmness, saying there is no military solution to the war and that Iran’s response to any renewed US military action would be stronger than before.[13] Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei added that the latest US counterproposal was in line with earlier US proposals on nuclear issues.[14] Talks on ending the war appeared to be at an impasse.[15] Washington had meanwhile dialed back military operations in recent weeks in favor of economic pressure.[16] That pressure included US Treasury sanctions on Iran’s rail and automotive conglomerates during the week.[17]

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth countered on October 3 that the US blockade of the strait was “ironclad” and that Iran does not control the waterway.[18] US Central Command said it had redirected 125 commercial vessels as of September 30 since the US resumed its naval blockade of Iran in mid-July.[19] President Donald Trump had earlier rejected Iran’s seven-day proposal to reopen the strait, saying on September 26 that it “would not be acceptable”.[20] On October 1, Trump said he is considering renewing a bombing campaign in the coming weeks.[21] In a magazine interview, however, he said it is “possible” he could escalate bombing of Iran after the November midterm elections.[22]

Inside Iran, the intelligence ministry said it had arrested 31 members of four alleged “sabotage” networks in Kerman province that it linked to the United States and Israel.[23] Separately, an IED attack on a Fatemiyoun Division vehicle in Sistan and Baluchistan killed five people, according to local media groups.[24]

US Force Posture and CENTCOM

The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group left San Diego quietly on September 27 and is expected to reach the Middle East around mid-November, according to a US official.[25] The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, carrying 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit Marines, left for the region a day later and is due by the end of November, the official said.[26] A second US official said it had not been determined whether the Roosevelt would replace a carrier already in the region or be added to it.[27] One account holds that the Roosevelt strike group was deployed on September 27 to replace the USS George Washington strike group.[28] Asked about the Roosevelt on October 3, Hegseth declined to say whether the strike group would be sent to the Middle East, saying the Pentagon was working to give the president the widest possible military options.[29] A US official said three aircraft carriers and two amphibious groups would be positioned near Iran by the end of November.[30] If the deployments overlap, the United States could have three carrier strike groups and two amphibious groups in the region by the end of October.[31] The USS George H W Bush, meanwhile, arrived off Phuket, Thailand, on October 4 for a port visit through October 9 after months supporting US operations in the Middle East.[32]

Two US officials and a regional source said the US military recently sent additional Patriot batteries to protect energy facilities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.[33] CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins declined to comment on the Patriot deployments.[34] Senior officials, including Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Dan Caine, met at Camp David on Friday, October 2, to discuss the Iran war and the Saudi-Houthi conflict, sources familiar with the meeting said.[35] Initial reports citing US officials said Trump is weighing putting ground troops in Iran after the November midterms.[36] No CENTCOM press release dated after July 29, 2026 appeared on the command’s media page when it was checked on October 4.[37]

Yemen, Red Sea and Saudi Arabia (Houthis)

Yemen’s government opened a new phase of the war on Sunday, October 4, when Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad al-Alimi announced the start of military operations to retake the remaining Houthi-held territory.[38] In a televised address, he said he had instructed the armed forces, security forces and all military formations to carry out their assigned tasks under an approved plan until the country is liberated from the Houthis.[39] The announcement came as several security sources said the Houthis had taken the al-Safiya area, cut the main road to Taiz and effectively encircled the city.[40] Yemeni analyst Farea Al-Muslimi said the Houthis had achieved their military objective of isolating Taiz from Aden.[41] That account sat uneasily with the finding that no evidence of significant Houthi advances on the Taiz fronts had been observed as of October 3.[42]

Government forces spokesman Colonel Majed al-Nazili said Yemeni forces carried out 257 targeting operations on October 3 and that initial estimates indicated at least 700 Houthis were killed.[43] Early on October 4, the Saudi-led coalition said its forces carried out 97 targeting operations against Houthi reinforcements on the Tor al-Baha front and the Taiz axis.[44] Al-Nazili said those attacks targeted at least 260 Houthi fighters and destroyed or disabled 44 military vehicles.[45] In Sanaa, local sources said at least 13 airstrikes hit the city on October 3.[46] Houthi media put the figure at 26 Saudi strikes on the capital that day.[47] Journalists in the city heard at least five blasts, and one saw two warplanes firing missiles at it.[48] Houthi media separately claimed that Saudi forces launched 94 strikes on Houthi-held areas in 24 hours, bringing the claimed total to 1,350 since fighting renewed.[49] Houthi media also said Saudi strikes hit the al-Jawf and Saada governorates, wounding at least two people.[50]

Behind the escalation, Saudi Arabia is planning an offensive against the Houthis, led by Yemeni ground forces with Saudi air support, in the coming weeks, according to six people with knowledge of the preparations.[51] The options include a narrow push around Bab el-Mandeb or a wider offensive with synchronized attacks in Al-Bayda, Marib, Taiz and Al-Jawf.[52] Those sources’ estimates of the launch ranged from within a week to after the early-November US midterm elections.[53] One Western diplomat said Washington is providing military advisers and intelligence, including targeting information, for Saudi air operations in Yemen.[54] A Pakistani official said Pakistan has deployed between 30,000 and 40,000 troops to Saudi Arabia for border defense and missile and drone interception.[55]

The Houthis seized the port city of Mocha and strategic islands in the Bab al-Mandab strait in mid-September, before anti-Houthi forces stabilized front lines.[56] Another account says the Houthis advanced down the coast last month and took control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait itself.[57] A third account says the Houthis seized Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast, including the strait, in the September offensive.[58]

On Saturday, October 3, a witness saw a large plume of smoke and fire near an Aramco facility in Riyadh, and Saudi authorities had not confirmed an attack.[59] Firefighters were seen trying to extinguish a blaze at the Riyadh refinery south of the capital.[60] The Houthis then said they had targeted an Aramco facility in Riyadh with ballistic missiles and drones in retaliation for Saudi attacks on Sanaa and other provinces.[61] Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree described the attack in a statement on X as precise and direct and said it “led to fires breaking out” at the site.[62] Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that an attack took place but said the Saudis were still assessing who was responsible.[63] Later that day, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki called the Houthi claims of targeting Riyadh “misleading”.[64] The Houthis likely did attack the Riyadh refinery.[65] By Sunday, Saree had also claimed ballistic missile and drone attacks on two Aramco sites, one in Riyadh and one in the Khurais area about 150 km north-east of the capital, with no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia.[66]

Earlier in the week, coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said a Houthi drone struck Medina’s Taibah electricity distribution station early on Tuesday, September 29, and that one transformer was taken out of service.[67] The Houthis denied any involvement.[68] Saudi Civil Defense said debris from an intercepted ballistic missile injured one resident in Ahad Rafidah, Asir.[69] Saudi Civil Defence said a Houthi projectile struck a school in Najran on October 2, causing material damage.[70] The coalition spokesman said three Houthi ballistic missiles fired toward Khamis Mushait were intercepted.[71]

Israel and Gaza

Israel struck a Gaza City apartment building in a pre-dawn airstrike on Saturday, October 3, in an attempt to kill Hamas’s top Gaza leader, Ali al-Amoudi, the Israeli military said.[72] Local officials said the strike killed five people, four of them women.[73] Civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said two missiles hit the apartment directly.[74] A correspondent in Gaza heard fighter jets and then three strikes hit the apartment in the Remal neighborhood without prior warning.[75] Later that day, the military said the strike, carried out with the Israel Security Agency, targeted Amoudi in an apartment “used for terror activity, inside a residential building,” and that the results were still under review.[76] It described Amoudi as deputy chairman of Hamas’s political bureau in Gaza and “the most senior Hamas figure in the Gaza Strip,” and said he was targeted to “remove the threat”.[77] The military also said it took steps to reduce civilian harm, including using precise munitions, and “regrets any harm” to uninvolved people.[78] Assessments circulating in Israel on Saturday evening leaned toward the attempt having failed.[79] Security sources, however, said Amoudi was in the targeted complex and that his chances of surviving were “very slim”.[80] Hamas condemned the strike and said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is using the US-mediated ceasefire as cover for attacks.[81]

Elsewhere in the territory, hospital sources said eight Palestinians died across Gaza on October 3, including one killed in Beit Lahiya and two who died of earlier wounds.[82] The Gaza health ministry says Israeli forces have killed more than 1,440 people since the ceasefire was announced a year ago.[83] The ministry put the toll from ceasefire violations at 1,439 as of Thursday, October 1.[84] The Gaza Government Media Office counted 5,147 Israeli violations of the ceasefire and 1,421 Palestinians killed since it took effect.[85] The Israeli military has identified five deaths in its ranks and one civilian contractor death since the ceasefire was announced.[86] Humanitarian access remains constrained, with the World Health Organization saying on October 2 that approved aid can enter Gaza only through Kerem Shalom, while Rafah is open only for limited movement of people.[87] WHO’s representative in Palestine, Reinhilde Van De Weerdt, said a shipment of prosthetics had been rejected four times in six months.[88]

Lebanon

Lebanese state media said Israeli forces blew up a private school building in Houla and set homes on fire on October 3.[89] They said Israeli artillery shelled Khiam, Tallouseh and Bani Hayyan the same day.[90] Israeli warplanes also struck Bani Hayyan twice and Kfar Tibnit in two waves, those accounts said.[91] Israeli forces carried out large detonations in Mansouri, Aitaroun and Tallouseh, they added.[92] Israeli airstrikes also hit the Wadi al-Hujair area and the outskirts of Kfar Tebnit, with no immediate reports of casualties.[93]

The Israeli military said eight soldiers were lightly wounded on October 2 when two army vehicles collided near Rab al-Thalathine in southern Lebanon and that the circumstances were under investigation.[94] On Sunday morning, it added that a soldier was seriously wounded and an officer moderately wounded on October 2 when a grenade thrown during a search near Majdal Zoun exploded close to them, describing it as an operational accident.[95] Israeli security officials said the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade destroyed more than 600 Hezbollah infrastructure sites during an 80-day mission along the Yellow Line.[96] One security official said that once an order is given, IDF forces are “one night away from Tyre”.[97] Officials assess that Hezbollah will keep trying to infiltrate pockets along the Yellow Line to harm IDF soldiers.[98] Diplomacy is also moving, with a Lebanese-Israeli round of military-delegation talks scheduled for the second half of October in Tampa, Florida.[99]

Syria

Local media reports said the Israeli military opened artillery fire on the demilitarized zone in Quneitra on October 3, with impacts near the Al-Mantara dam.[100] The same reports said a convoy of 12 Israeli military vehicles entered Maariya and that eyewitnesses said two young men were detained.[101] At least five Israeli incursions into southern Syria were recorded in the previous 24 hours, they added.[102] Syrian state media said Israeli forces entered Saida al-Hanout in southern Quneitra on October 3 and fired toward homes and media crews, including a state news agency team, with no casualties.[103] The same media said Israeli artillery shelled the outskirts of Abidin in western Daraa on October 3, with no casualties reported.[104] No other outlet on the summarizing publisher’s source roster carried an account of those incidents.[105] Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, told the UN General Assembly on September 23 that Israel must withdraw from all Syrian areas seized since December 2024.[106]

Iraq

The US military declared an end to Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq on Wednesday, September 30, after all coalition forces and equipment left Erbil Air Base.[107] Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell called the departure “the successful conclusion of the military mission that defeated ISIS in Iraq”.[108] Roughly 1,500 US troops who had been in Syria withdrew earlier in 2026.[109] Hours after the departure, Kataib Hezbollah secretary general Ahmad al-Hamidawi said “the resistance has won this round, and the victor is the one who imposes his conditions on the enemy”.[110] He said the group had reached no result with the prime minister on disarmament after waiting for his answer “until the last hour”.[111] He also ordered fighters to halt all military operations, except against hostile aircraft violating Iraqi airspace, until government air defences are completed.[112] Islamic Resistance in Iraq spokesman Jaafar al-Husseini said the factions are not bound by any timeline or agreement, after more than 40 days of negotiating weapons regulation through a Coordination Framework committee.[113] Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi nonetheless set June 30, 2027 as the deadline for bringing weapons outside state control under government authority.[114] Zaidi also said Iraq’s government will begin purchasing complete air defence systems.[115] Only Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Kataib Imam Ali and Moqtada al-Sadr’s Saraya al-Salam claim to have placed their weapons under state authority.[116] Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada and Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya announced on October 1 a commitment to an unspecified Shia Coordination Framework disarmament agreement.[117] US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accused Kataib Hezbollah of involvement in a drone attack that shut Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, which the group denied.[118]

Statements by Military Leaders

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on October 3 that the US blockade had been “ironclad” and that, in terms of throughput, “we’re running almost at prewar levels every single night”.[119] He said Iran “ought make the right choice” and that otherwise the president would have “all the options he needs on the table”.[120] Hegseth said the message was simple, that “Iran will never ever ever have a nuclear weapon,” and that Trump was “hell-bent and determined” to ensure it.[121] He added that Iran was trying to rebuild missile and military capabilities damaged in US strikes but that the destruction of its defense industry had made the process slow and difficult.[122] Hegseth said his job was to maximize the president’s “decision space,” and he declined to say whether the Roosevelt strike group would go to the Middle East.[123]

CENTCOM said that the task force overseeing anti-ISIS operations had been relocated to Jordan, with hundreds of US troops still in Syria.[124] CENTCOM said the Erbil base had hosted 1,500 US and coalition troops before the departure.[125] Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the departure “marks a transition from a wartime coalition mission to an Iraqi-led security effort supported by a more normal bilateral security relationship”.[126] Parnell said the United States expects Iraqi Security Forces, including the Peshmerga, to lead the effort to keep ISIS remnants suppressed, while continuing “targeted training and intelligence support”.[127] CENTCOM spokesman Hawkins, asked about Patriot deployments to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, declined to comment.[128] CENTCOM stated that 125 commercial vessels had been redirected since the blockade of Iran resumed in mid-July.[129]

On the Iranian side, the IRGC warned that it stood “with its finger on the trigger” and would respond “more lethally than Operation True Promise II” to any US or regional threat.[130] Army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said on October 4 that Iran will increase the range of its missiles because US forces are now positioned as much as 1,000 km from the Iranian coast.[131] He said Iran had concluded during the war that it “absolutely must increase the range” of its missiles and had “moved in that direction”.[132]

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said on October 3 that the group had carried out a “military operation with ballistic missiles and drones” targeting Aramco in Riyadh.[133] Saree claimed the strikes were “precise and direct”.[134] Saudi-led coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said later that day that the Houthis’ “ties to external agendas” have brought “chaos and devastation to Yemen”.[135] Al-Maliki also dismissed the Houthi claims about Riyadh as “misleading”.[136] On October 1, al-Maliki said “the investigation and evidence gathered by the competent authorities” had confirmed Houthi involvement in the Medina drone strike.[137] The Saudi-led coalition said early on October 4 that its armed forces had carried out 97 “precise targeting operations” using warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles and snipers.[138] Colonel Majed al-Nazili, spokesman for Yemen’s government forces, said Yemeni forces executed 257 precision targeting operations on October 3.[139] Al-Nazili said the attacks targeted at least 260 Houthi fighters and destroyed or disabled 44 military vehicles.[140]

The Israeli military said the strike on Ali al-Amoudi was an attempt to eliminate him while he was in an apartment “used by the Hamas terrorist organization for terror activities”.[141] It said Amoudi was “directly involved in Hamas’s terror activities and in rebuilding the organization for war”.[142] The military said it took steps to “minimize harm to civilians as much as possible”.[143] On Lebanon, the military said eight soldiers were lightly wounded when two army vehicles collided in the south.[144] The military said a soldier was seriously wounded and an officer moderately wounded when a grenade exploded near Majdal Zoun.[145]

Kataib Hezbollah’s al-Hamidawi said the group “did not reach a result with the Prime Minister” and that “it is better to start anew”.[146] The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, through spokesman Jaafar al-Husseini, declared that it “is not bound by any timeline or agreement” by any government or political entity.[147]

What to Watch (Assessment)

The launch and scale of the announced Yemeni government offensive, including any push toward Bab el-Mandeb, is the most important development to track, since such a push has been described as a key Saudi objective.[148]

The status of the Taiz supply road remains unresolved, because security sources said it was cut on October 4 while no significant Houthi advances had been observed on October 3.[149]

More attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz are likely while Iran holds to its seven conditions, given the two struck vessels over the weekend.[150]

The timing of any renewed US bombing of Iran is uncertain, since Trump has pointed both to the coming weeks and to the period after the midterms.[151]

Confirmation of whether Amoudi survived, and any Hamas or Israeli follow-on action, will show whether the Gaza ceasefire erodes further, since the military had not confirmed the result as of October 3.[152]

The Lebanese-Israeli military talks planned for the second half of October are the next scheduled diplomatic test for southern Lebanon.[153]
