Saudi Arabia and Yemen

A projectile struck Terminal 4 at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 11, killing one Pakistani resident and injuring 11 other people, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said.[34] The Saudi-led coalition said an unidentified projectile targeted the terminal and caused a fire, and that Saudi air defenses intercepted a cruise missile in the airport’s vicinity the same day.[35] The coalition later said a drone was destroyed in the Eastern Province and a ballistic missile headed toward Khamis Mushait was intercepted.[36] Emergency alerts were issued in Abha early on October 12 before the danger passed, Saudi Civil Defense said.[37]

The October 11 strike came a day after the October 10 attack on the same airport complex, which Saudi authorities had put at 12 dead and 309 wounded and which some later accounts put at 13 dead.[38] Tallies for the wider week differed: one compilation put deaths from attacks on Riyadh’s airport at 18, while another put deaths at Saudi airports over the week at least at 20, including an American killed on October 10.[39] The airport remained closed after the October 10 strike, and about 60 percent of scheduled flights there were expected to be cancelled on October 12, according to aviation analytics cited in reporting.[40]

In a televised speech on October 11, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the October 10 Riyadh attack and said the group had also struck Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport and two Saudi Aramco facilities.[41] Saudi civil aviation confirmed a strike on Dammam late on October 11 and said damage assessments were under way.[42] An eyewitness aboard a taxiing aircraft at Dammam said that around 8:30 p.m. local time a projectile hit the tarmac beside parked aircraft and caused a fire, after which passengers were told to leave.[43] Saudi government and Aramco offices did not immediately confirm the claimed Aramco hits.[44]

The Houthis renewed warnings to airlines and travelers to avoid Saudi airports and airspace except Mecca and Medina, saying Saudi Arabia “bears responsibility for any failed interceptions.”[45] The Houthi-run foreign ministry said Saudi Arabia carried out 124 air strikes in Yemen in 24 hours and warned that “worse is yet to come” unless Riyadh stops its campaign.[46] Houthi-run health officials said airstrikes around midnight on October 11–12 on Sanaa’s Hamadan district and a house killed one person and wounded 12, accusations Saudi authorities had not confirmed by the data cutoff.[47]

On the ground, Houthi fighters intensified the siege of Taiz, with military sources on both sides saying more than 60 people were killed in 24 hours, including about 22 government-aligned and 40 Houthi fighters.[48] Those sources said the Houthis had blocked all exits from the city and were sending reinforcements.[49] Health officials had already warned on October 11 of a humanitarian crisis as medicines, equipment and fuel neared depletion.[50] Capture of Taiz would give the Houthis a foothold threatening Aden, the seat of the internationally recognized government further south.[51]

The five-day WPC Energy Congress opened as planned on October 11 about 10 kilometers from the closed airport, the Saudi energy ministry said, and an International Energy Forum ministerial meeting also went ahead.[52] Italy’s energy minister participated remotely; German officials said Economy Minister Katherina Reiche’s return flight on October 12 appeared unlikely to depart.[53] Riyadh schools shifted to remote learning from October 11 through October 15.[54]

The Strait of Hormuz and the Blockade

British maritime authorities said on October 12 that they had reclassified an incident near the Sohar anchorage in Oman as an attack after confirming a tanker was struck by a drone.[55] Local authorities were assisting with crew evacuation; damage and environmental impact were unknown at the time of the update.[56] India’s ports, shipping and waterways minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, said a tanker carrying 11 Indian nationals was struck by a drone in the Sohar region, that nine crew were rescued and safe, and that two Indians remained missing with search-and-rescue under way.[57]

CENTCOM’s public release, opened for this report, said US forces on October 10 disabled the Panama-flagged M/V Ocean Molica (also known as Arika Sun) in the Gulf of Oman after the crew ignored repeated warnings, striking the stern with a precision munition and disabling propulsion without harming the crew.[58] CENTCOM said four commercial vessels have been disabled and 135 ships turned around since the blockade resumed on July 14, and that US forces destroyed 10 tankers linked to the IRGC over the same period.[59] The Department of War’s news feeds carried no new Middle East combat item in the window; the latest war-related story on the RSS checked remained the October 9 account of the USS Abraham Lincoln’s return.[60]

UKMTO had reported on October 11 that an unidentified projectile struck an outbound tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, with the crew safe and damage unknown, and that ship masters near Ras al-Khaimah had been directed by radio to leave their anchorages.[61] The UAE said its coastguard rescued 22 crew, described as Indian citizens, after a tanker fire near its shores, without stating the cause.[62] The IRGC Navy claimed on October 10–11 that a crude supertanker on an unauthorized route hit a naval mine and caught fire, and Iranian state-affiliated reporting later referred to multiple mine incidents that day; independent confirmation of mines remained absent by the data cutoff.[63]

Marine data cited in reporting showed average crude through the strait for the week ended October 7 at about 8.5 million barrels per day, roughly 40 percent below normal, and only seven tankers transiting on one recent Tuesday, the lowest count since July 23.[64] Analysts linked the renewed Iranian pressure to earlier weeks when volumes had recovered toward pre-war levels.[65]

Washington and the Wider Coalition

The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia said on October 12 it was aware of additional attacks on King Khalid International Airport and a targeted attack on King Fahd International Airport on October 11, and urged Americans to take “extreme caution” when using all major Saudi airports.[66] The FAA issued a Notice to Airmen, lasting until December 10, telling US airlines to exercise caution when flying to or over Saudi Arabia because of military activity and interference with navigation systems.[67] Britain’s embassy advised against all but essential travel to Jeddah, Dammam and Saudi airports except Medina.[68]

President Donald Trump said on October 10 that the United States “may” join Saudi strikes on the Houthis and would “look at it,” remarks that remained the latest presidential statement on the question in this window.[69] Direct US combat against the Houthis would be the first since Operation Rough Rider ended in May 2025.[70] Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan would back Saudi Arabia “in every possible way,” citing a bilateral agreement and a trilateral defense pact with Saudi Arabia and Turkey under which an attack on one is treated as an attack on all.[71] Pakistan’s military confirmed last week that Pakistani forces are deployed in Saudi Arabia in “multiple capabilities and domains.”[72] Six Pakistani nationals were among those injured in the Riyadh strike, Sharif’s remarks noted.[73]

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about regional escalation and efforts to lower tensions, Saudi state news reported on October 11, their first publicly reported contact since the latest Houthi surge.[74] Araghchi said in a Telegram post that Tehran was ready to help facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.[75] On October 12, Araghchi said Iran was still reviewing the US response to its proposal and that “the exchange of messages between Iran and the United States through mediators is continuing.”[76]

Israel, Gaza, Lebanon and Syria

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on October 12 that authorities would identify everyone involved in a truck carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives, including C-4, intercepted days earlier near Dahr al-Baidar while traveling from the Bekaa Valley toward Greater Beirut.[77] He said the drivers were detained and referred for questioning, and wrote that the government would not be lenient and would act against weapons held, transported or used outside state authority.[78] An IDF soldier was lightly wounded in Lebanon on or before October 12, according to an Israeli press roundup; further operational detail was not in the pages opened for this update.[79]

A Saturday report summarized on October 12 said the Board of Peace expects “very substantial groundwork” on Gaza post-war governance and reconstruction to move into fuller execution after Israel’s October 27 election and the US midterms.[80] A source was quoted saying there is movement that may not look like “major movement” from the outside before the elections.[81] The Board of Peace, responding to an investigation into alleged conflicts of interest involving senior figures including Jared Kushner, said the investigation failed to identify any Board contract or decision influenced by commercial interests and called the concerns insinuation.[82] The Board also said Hamas has accepted a disarmament plan, that an International Stabilization Force and transitional administration are preparing to deploy, and that initial police recruits have been selected, while acknowledging significant challenges remain.[83] No new IDF Gaza strike release was successfully opened in this run after a Times of Israel liveblog fetch returned 403; prior-day IDF claims are not restated here.[84]

Domestic Affairs

No killing of an IRGC, Quds Force, Basij or regular Iranian army member was reported in the window by the sources checked.[85] A drone struck an Iranian Kurdish opposition camp in Koya, east of Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, on October 12, with no immediate casualty reports, according to security sources cited in reporting.[86]

SNSC Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said the US response to Iran’s seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was insufficient, that Washington had accepted some conditions while others remained unclear, and that the strait would not open and negotiations would not proceed until the conditions were met.[87] Rezaei also warned that regional data cables, data centers and artificial-intelligence facilities could be “in the line of fire” if war breaks out again, state media reported.[88] Foreign Ministry messaging and Araghchi’s October 12 remarks framed Tehran as still reviewing the US reply while keeping mediator channels open.[89] Parliament national-security spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi said Qatar had conveyed a US response but Washington’s position remained unclear.[90]

Defense minister nominee Mehrdad Akhlaghi outlined 16 priorities in a parliamentary session on October 12, including redesigning the ministry, rebuilding industrial infrastructure, integrating emerging technologies and strengthening air defenses.[91] He said sanctions had not stopped defense production and called for attention to housing, healthcare and livelihoods of military personnel and retirees.[92] Acting defense minister Majid Ebn al-Reza warned the United States against “playing with fire” and urged regional countries to leave the US security umbrella.[93] Lawmaker Alireza Monadi said public demands should be raised without wartime rallies or slogans that could suggest domestic division.[94] Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni said more than six million foreign nationals were in Iran, some seeking onward travel through Azerbaijan and Turkey.[95]

The near-total loss of seaborne crude loadings under the US blockade, together with elevated freight costs on land routes reported in prior days, continues to squeeze Iran’s budget and currency into the winter.[96] Public rejection of the US Hormuz reply as insufficient, paired with continued mediator traffic, suggests Tehran is trying to hold its seven conditions while avoiding a total break in talks before the US midterms.[97]

War Crimes and Civilian Harm

Allegations are attributed; findings are not established unless stated.

The Saudi-led coalition on October 11 again described the October 10 strike on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport as a fully fledged war crime under international humanitarian law, an allegation by a party to the conflict.[98] The October 11 Terminal 4 strike killed one civilian and injured 11 at a passenger facility, according to Saudi civil aviation, continuing the pattern of attacks on civil aviation sites.[99] Houthi health officials accused Saudi Arabia of airstrikes in Sanaa that killed one person and wounded 12, including women and children at a house, claims not independently verified and not confirmed by Riyadh in the sources checked.[100]

Yemeni health officials and dual-sided military sources described a humanitarian emergency in besieged Taiz, with medicine and fuel near depletion and more than 60 combat deaths in a day as exits were blocked.[101] UKMTO and India’s ports minister described a drone strike on a tanker off Oman that left two Indian crew missing after rescue of nine others, an attack on a commercial vessel and its civilian crew.[102]

Gaza casualty figures from the territory’s Health Ministry for the year since the ceasefire were not newly updated in the primary pages opened for this window beyond prior reporting; no new independent war-crimes finding by a UN commission or court was opened in this run.[103]

Statements by Military Leaders

CENTCOM said, “All mariners are advised to heed blockade warnings from CENTCOM forces,” in its October 10 release on the Ocean Molica, which remained the command’s latest opened public release on the blockade in this window.[104] The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a cruise missile near King Khalid International Airport and later missiles and drones headed toward Saudi Arabia, and that it was responding to the continuing threat.[105] Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said in his October 11 address that the group had struck Riyadh’s airport, Dammam’s airport and Aramco facilities, and the movement urged everyone to take its airport warnings “seriously.”[106] India’s ports minister said search-and-rescue was under way for two missing Indian crew after the Sohar drone strike.[107]

Iranian Leadership

No new public statement by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was found in the window.[108] SNSC Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said, “We presented seven conditions to the Americans and clearly stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not be opened to them, and no negotiations would take place, until these conditions are met.”[109] He added that in their response “they have accepted some of our conditions, while others remain unclear.”[110] Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on October 12, “I can tell you that the exchange of messages between Iran and the United States through mediators is continuing,” and that there had already been considerable discussion of the seven points.[111] Araghchi also told his Saudi counterpart that Tehran was ready to facilitate Saudi-Yemen dialogue.[112] Defense nominee Mehrdad Akhlaghi said his plan “sets out 16 priorities, one of which is redesigning and rebuilding the ministry for the future.”[113] Acting defense minister Majid Ebn al-Reza warned Washington against “playing with fire.”[114] No statements in the window were found from the IRGC commander-in-chief or the Armed Forces General Staff beyond prior Sayyari remarks already covered on October 11.[115]

What to Watch (Assessment)

Trump’s still-open decision on joining Saudi strikes on the Houthis remains the main near-term test of whether the Yemen war becomes a direct US fight before the midterms.[116] Whether mediators can close the gaps Rezaei flagged in the US reply will show if Hormuz can reopen on any negotiated basis this month.[117] The search for two missing Indian crew off Sohar, and any further drone or mine claims in the Gulf of Oman, will indicate whether the maritime fight is shifting southeast of the strait.[118] Fighting for Taiz’s remaining approaches will likely decide whether the Houthis convert Red Sea gains into pressure on Aden.[119] Pakistan’s deployed forces and any operational role they take under the Mecca and trilateral pacts will show how far Riyadh’s defense network expands beyond US and British air-defense support.[120]

Seven lenses

Analysis

About the framework

Geography & Strategic Position

The war’s geographic center of gravity stayed on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, struck again on October 11 after the deadly October 10 hit, while Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport also came under fire the same evening (see Saudi Arabia and Yemen).[1] At sea, the danger moved beyond the Hormuz lanes themselves when British maritime authorities confirmed a drone strike on a tanker near Oman’s Sohar anchorage, about 200 kilometers southeast of the strait (see The Strait of Hormuz and the Blockade).[2] Inside Yemen, the Houthis’ reported sealing of all exits from Taiz turns that inland city into the decisive terrain link between the Red Sea coastal gains of September and the government seat at Aden further south.[3]

Military & Security

Repeated Houthi penetrations of Riyadh’s air defenses, including a cruise-missile intercept near the capital airport on the same day a projectile still hit Terminal 4, show coverage gaps rather than a full collapse of Saudi defenses.[4] US enforcement of the Iran-port blockade continues with graduated air-launched strikes on propulsion, as CENTCOM’s October 10 release on the Ocean Molica restated, while Iran pairs claimed mine and projectile incidents with warnings to vessels on unauthorized routes.[5] Fighting around Taiz that killed more than 60 people in 24 hours, if the dual-sided casualty figures hold, marks the densest ground fighting of the current Yemen offensive.[6]

Alliances & Diplomatic Networks

Pakistan’s prime minister publicly tied the Mecca defense pact and a Pakistan-Saudi-Turkey trilateral agreement to full military backing after the Riyadh and Abha strikes, and Pakistani forces are already reported deployed in the kingdom (see Washington and the Wider Coalition).[7] The first publicly reported contact since the latest Houthi surge between Saudi Arabia’s and Iran’s foreign ministers, with Tehran offering to facilitate Saudi-Yemen dialogue, keeps a diplomatic channel open even as the air war widens.[8] US, British and European aviation and embassy warnings against Saudi airport use widen the coalition of governments treating Houthi strikes on civilian aviation as a shared risk.[9]

Economic & Industrial Power

Brent crude climbed back above $105 a barrel on October 12 as the airport campaign and Hormuz incidents kept energy markets on edge, a two-week high despite separate US talk of Russian diesel purchases.[10] Strait transit fell to seven tankers on one recent day, the lowest since July 23, and weekly crude throughput around 8.5 million barrels per day remains about 40 percent below the peacetime norm.[11] Saudi Aramco’s chief executive said the company is studying additional crude export routes and expanding overseas storage, which is a commercial hedge against chokepoint and airport risk.[12]

Technology & Critical Infrastructure

A confirmed drone strike on a tanker off Sohar shows that low-cost unmanned systems, not only mines or manned boats, are now hitting commercial traffic well outside the narrowest Hormuz lanes.[13] Iran’s SNSC secretary warned that regional data cables, data centers and artificial-intelligence facilities could be “in the line of fire” if fighting expands again, elevating digital infrastructure as a stated wartime target set.[14] FAA notices citing military activity and navigation-system interference through December 10 treat Saudi airspace itself as a contested electromagnetic and kinetic environment for civil aviation.[15]

Domestic Politics & Information

Iran’s leadership is publicly reviewing Washington’s reply to its seven Hormuz conditions while telling domestic audiences that some US answers are insufficient and that message traffic through mediators continues (see Domestic Affairs).[16] A defense-minister nominee laid out air-defense and industrial rebuild priorities in parliament, which signals that reconstituting damaged systems remains a political as well as a military task inside Tehran.[17] Hardline messaging that wartime rallies could encourage enemy attack shows the leadership’s effort to manage dissent while the economy absorbs the blockade.[18]

Score 3/5Evidence confidence: MediumTrend: Deteriorating

Strategic Leverage & Outcomes

Tehran’s stated aim of tying Hormuz reopening to an end of the US blockade and related conditions is not advancing while Washington keeps enforcing the port blockade and Iran keeps striking or claiming strikes on shipping.[19] Riyadh’s air campaign and Yemen ground offensive have not stopped Houthi missiles from reaching the capital, so Saudi leverage still depends on whether outside partners, including the United States and Pakistan, deepen air defense and strike support.[20] For US interests, the immediate test is whether Trump decides to join Saudi strikes on the Houthis before the November midterms, a step that would expand direct American combat against an Iran-aligned force beyond the naval blockade.[21]

Score 3/5Evidence confidence: MediumTrend: Unclear

Strategic assessment

Relative advantage
The United States still denies Iran seaborne oil loadings through the July 14 blockade, while Iran retains the ability to raise the insurance and transit cost of Gulf energy flows.[22]
Critical vulnerability
Saudi Arabia’s inability to keep Riyadh’s main airport continuously open under Houthi fire threatens both commercial aviation and the kingdom’s claim to protect pilgrims and energy diplomacy on its soil.[23]
Decisive uncertainty
Whether Washington joins Saudi strikes on the Houthis, and whether Tehran and Washington can close gaps on the seven Hormuz conditions through mediators, remain unresolved before the US midterms and Israel’s October 27 election.[24]
Likely trajectory
Cross-border Houthi strikes and Taiz fighting are likely to continue in the near term while Hormuz diplomacy stays stalled and oil prices stay elevated.[25]
Strategic outcome
Not yet determinable; neither the blockade-and-diplomacy track nor the Yemen escalation has produced a settlement that reopens Hormuz on agreed terms or ends the Saudi-Houthi air war.[26]
