KYIV — September 14, 2026. A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train about two kilometers from the Polish border near the Yahodyn / Yagodin checkpoint on September 13, Ukrainian Railways said, in an attack that injured no passengers but landed meters from NATO territory. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strike “Putin’s terror… knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO.” Poland’s Government Security Center issued an air-threat alert for several counties in Lublin Voivodeship as the wider drone wave spilled toward the frontier.
Ukrzaliznytsia said a diplomatic train had been at Yagodin shortly beforehand carrying, among others, security advisers from EU member states and former British prime minister Boris Johnson; another train at the station carried former CIA director David Petraeus. Journalist Katerina Sergatskova, who witnessed the aftermath, told the Kyiv Independent that passengers were ordered to evacuate with no nearby shelter. In Warsaw, Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting and warned he expected Russian escalation “in the coming weeks,” adding that spillover onto Polish territory could not be excluded. In Kyiv, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said the strike a few hundred meters from the border should push allies to “double” support for Ukraine.
The Yahodyn hit is politically louder than its casualty count. Western Ukraine, long a quieter rear, absorbed a heavy share of a mass assault Ukraine’s Air Force numbered at 453 strike and decoy drones plus S8000 Banderol missiles, with air defenses claiming 405 drones and six missiles downed and impacts at thirteen locations. Nationwide, regional officials reported at least six civilians killed and forty-three injured over the day. For NATO planners, a locomotive smoking two kilometers from Poland is the escalation metric that matters: Russia is rehearsing pressure on the Alliance’s edge even when the declared target remains Ukrainian steel.
