Russia Launches 108 Drones; Kyiv High-Rise and Bridges Hit
Air Force says 88 of 108 overnight drones were downed; one killed in Darnytskyi as Southern Bridge closes and Paton traffic is curbed.
KYIV — Russia launched 108 attack drones at Ukraine overnight into October 2, killing at least one person in a Kyiv high-rise and forcing authorities to shut the capital’s Southern Bridge after repeated strikes on the same crossing within 24 hours, Ukrainian officials said.
Ukraine’s Air Force said the wave that began around 6 p.m. on October 1 included Shahed-type drones—47 of them jet-powered—plus Gerbera and Parodiya decoy craft launched from Bryansk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast, and Crimea’s Hvardiiske area. By 8 a.m. local time, air defenses had shot down or suppressed 88 drones, with hits recorded at 11 locations and debris falling at five more, according to tallies carried by Kyiv Post and RBC-Ukraine.
High-rise fire and three bridges disrupted
In Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, a strike damaged the upper floors of a 25-story residential building. The State Emergency Service said fire spread across about 120 square meters on the 24th and 25th floors before crews extinguished it; structural damage covered roughly 40 square meters. Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed one death and two injuries around 7:45 a.m. Rescuers evacuated six other residents, Mayor Vitali Klitschko and emergency officials reported.
Russian drones also struck the Pivdennyi (Southern) Bridge again overnight—after earlier hits on October 1—and debris damaged windows and cars in Holosiivskyi district without reported casualties there. Klitschko said the Southern Bridge was completely closed in both directions. Traffic on the Paton Bridge was restricted from the right bank to the left, and the Metro Bridge was cut to a single lane from left bank to right, Interfax-Ukraine reported. City officials redirected buses and other traffic while engineers assessed the crossings.
Zelenskyy: kindergarten, store and regional hits
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian drones struck the Southern Bridge several times and hit a residential high-rise in the morning, expressing condolences for the Kyiv fatality. He said Russian forces also struck a kindergarten in Kherson, a grocery store in Kharkiv, and damaged an institute and critical infrastructure there, with apartment buildings hit in Kramatorsk and Sumy. Regions including Dnipro, Odesa, Poltava and Rivne came under attack as well. Zelenskyy said four people had been reported injured nationwide as emergency services worked the scenes.
He tied the overnight package to Russia’s continued access to foreign components, arguing that supply chains from Europe, the United States, China, Japan and elsewhere still feed Russian drone and missile production and that stronger sanctions could stop craft “on the production line.”
Pattern after the October 1 wave
The October 2 assault is close in size to the 107-drone package Peter’s World covered on October 1, but the operational picture is different: a confirmed fatality in a Darnytskyi tower, a full closure of the Southern Bridge after repeated strikes on the same span, and simultaneous curbs on two other Dnipro crossings that bind Kyiv’s eastern and western banks. Nearly half the Shaheds were jet-powered, continuing a shift Ukrainian air defenders say compresses engagement windows.
For partners debating interceptor stocks and counter-drone industry output, the night underscores that Russia can keep pressure on capital transport nodes even when most drones are downed. Bridge inspections and temporary lane cuts matter as much as raw shoot-down ratios when a city of three million must keep moving under nightly alerts.
