Poland Scrambles Jets After Russian Mi-8 Breaches Airspace
Poland scrambled fighter jets after a Russian Mi-8 helicopter from Kaliningrad crossed about 300 meters into Polish airspace near Braniewo for 42 seconds.
WARSAW / NEW YORK — September 23, 2026. Poland scrambled fighter jets on Wednesday after a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter briefly crossed into Polish airspace north of Braniewo, near the Kaliningrad exclave — an incident Warsaw’s Operational Command said lasted 42 seconds and reached a maximum depth of about 300 meters.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said the helicopter entered at 11:08 a.m. on a flight originating from Kaliningrad. Polish radio-location systems tracked the aircraft; fighters were scrambled and ground forces stayed on alert. “The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defense,” the command said in a statement.
The breach lands in a week already thick with hybrid-war warnings from NATO’s eastern flank. Polish prosecutors recently disclosed that a Russian Gerbera 2 drone recovered from the Baltic Sea last week carried a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. On September 17, Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Moscow could hit Ukrainian allies with drones or missiles and try to pass the strikes off as accidents — language that frames short airspace probes as part of a deliberate pressure campaign rather than navigation error.
Europe’s Year of Russian Hybrid Incidents
European capitals have spent 2026 attributing sabotage, cyber operations, espionage, and drone incidents to Russia’s effort to intimidate Kyiv’s backers while the full-scale war grinds on. Germany blamed Moscow for an attempted explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August. Earlier this month, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused a Russian frigate of firing flares at a Danish military helicopter and called the episode a test of NATO.
In New York, Polish President Karol Nawrocki told the United Nations General Assembly that Russia shows “ruthless persistence” in trying to conquer a neighboring state and destabilize the wider region. “We are not the ones seeking confrontation,” he said. Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted Moscow does not plan to attack NATO countries, while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that any European attack on Russia would produce a different — and “very short” — war.
Forty-two seconds and 300 meters do not equal an invasion. They do refresh the map around Braniewo: Kaliningrad remains a forward staging point for Russian aviation that can force Polish and NATO air defenses into scramble cycles on short notice. For Warsaw, the operational takeaway is continuity of readiness. For Alliance politics, the Mi-8 episode joins a lengthening ledger of Baltic and Polish incidents that keep hybrid warfare on the UNGA agenda even as diplomacy elsewhere focuses on Hormuz and Ukraine ceasefire formulas.
