Two IDF Reservists Killed by Their Own Drone at Northern Gaza Outpost
Two IDF reserve majors died when an explosive drone they operated crashed and detonated inside their northern Gaza outpost, grounding attack drones.
TEL AVIV / GAZA — September 25, 2026. Israel’s military said two reservist officers were killed when an explosive drone they were operating crashed inside their northern Gaza outpost and detonated as they approached it, prompting a temporary grounding of attack and munition-dropping drones across combat sectors.
The Israel Defense Forces identified the dead as Maj. (Res.) Nadav Kali, 24, of Har Halutz, and Maj. (Res.) Ofek Moalem, 23, of Jerusalem. Both served in the 16th Brigade under the 99th Division. According to Division Chief Brig. Gen. Elad Tzuri, the pair were flying a first-person-view drone on a second sortie when it came down inside the outpost. They walked to the crash site to investigate; the aircraft then exploded. The soldiers were evacuated toward Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon and pronounced dead. The brigade had been operating in that northern Gaza sector since about September 10, Tzuri said.
The IDF opened a brigadier-general-led investigation covering both why the drone crashed and why its warhead initiated when the operators closed in. Officers are examining whether Hamas used the electromagnetic spectrum to force a landing, while current military assessments reportedly judge that Hamas still lacks confirmed spectrum capabilities for that specific maneuver. Investigators are also weighing mechanical failure, software fault and fuse design. Pending results, the IDF grounded similar attack and munition-dropping drones in all theaters — an operational pause that will be felt from Gaza to Lebanon if it lasts beyond a short safety review.
Israel’s Mounting Losses in Gaza
The deaths add to Israel’s cumulative combat losses in Gaza since October 2023, which Israeli tallies place in the high hundreds of soldiers, even as a nominal ceasefire framework dating to October 2025 has failed to stop frequent strikes, buffer-zone occupation and continued Palestinian casualties. Palestinian health authorities and UN agencies continue to cite tens of thousands killed since 2023 and more than a thousand since the supposed ceasefire.
For a military that has made cheap FPV drones central to tactical kills, Friday’s accident is a systems story as much as a tragedy. Grounding the fleet protects crews while investigators work, but it also hands adversaries a temporary reduction in overhead lethality. Whether the cause is enemy electronic attack or an internal fuse/crash protocol failure, the IDF’s public candor about an own-side drone kill underscores how saturated the Gaza battlespace has become with short-range explosives that do not always distinguish friend from foe once they leave the operator’s hands.
