KYIV — Russia’s overnight wave of 107 drones Kyiv faced into October 1 killed at least six people and wounded 38 across Ukraine, Ukrainian regional authorities said, as the capital endured another day of alerts that included a strike on a school and drones that hit near the supports of Kyiv’s Southern Bridge.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 107 Shahed-type, Gerbera and decoy drones from the evening of September 30, including 63 jet-powered craft. Air defenses shot down or suppressed 87 of them by 8 a.m. local time, with hits recorded at 11 locations and debris falling at four more. Launch corridors included sites in Russia’s Oryol, Millerovo, Bryansk and Shatalovo areas as well as occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast and Crimea, according to the Air Force tally reported by Ukrainska Pravda and the Kyiv Independent.

Kyiv school and Southern Bridge

In Kyiv, a Russian drone struck a school in the Solomianskyi district earlier on October 1, sparking a fire on the third floor and damaging a wall, doors and windows, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Children and staff were in shelters; there were no immediate reports of casualties from that hit. Mayor Vitali Klitschko later said two drones struck near the supports of the Southern Bridge around midday, briefly suspending road and metro traffic across a key link between the city’s eastern and western banks. City officials said a preliminary inspection found no critical structural damage and that traffic later resumed.

Fires were also reported at a residential building in Solomianskyi and a warehouse in Obolonskyi, the State Emergency Service said. A data center at the Parkovy complex in Pecherskyi reported critical damage and a full shutdown. Kyiv had already logged one of its longest air-raid alert stretches of the full-scale war on September 30 after a major strike on energy infrastructure—the previous day’s assault that Peter’s World covered separately.

Outside the capital, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts each reported two deaths. Additional fatalities were recorded in Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts, while Kharkiv, Donetsk, Odesa and Rivne reported injuries. Some consumers in Kirovohrad, Rivne, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv oblasts remained without power on October 1 after the September 30 energy attacks, the Energy Ministry said.

Ukraine hits Black Sea target and Oryol drone site

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces also struck a Russian vessel in the Black Sea, a site in Russia’s Oryol region used to launch and store attack drones, an oil facility in Samara Oblast and a supply depot in Bryansk Oblast. He framed the deep strikes as a necessary reply to Russia’s intensified aerial campaign, which Ukrainian officials say increasingly relies on faster jet-powered drones that complicate interception.

The October 1 toll underscores a pattern distinct from the September 30 massed missile-and-drone raid on Kyiv’s power grid: a slightly smaller overnight package, heavier use of jet-powered Shaheds, and daytime pressure on civilian infrastructure and transport nodes even after most overnight drones were downed. For Ukraine’s partners debating air-defense stockpiles and counter-drone industrial output, the mix of school, bridge and regional casualties is a reminder that attrition in the air war is measured in hours, not only in headline salvo sizes.
